Hi guys,
I am new to the forum and new to hunting. I am interested in hearing how some of y'all got into hunting.
I grew up in Williamson County, in the part of town where going to the lake on Friday night and knocking a few back around the fire is normal. I have fished as long as I can remember and carry a couple polls in my truck in case I get the urge on the way home from work but I never went hunting until this year.
When my younger brother decided he wanted to join the army at the age of 17, my dad decided it was time for us to learn to shoot. We took out and dusted off the old shotguns and learned to shoot skeet. After many great days at the range, I decided I wanted to move up and learn other guns.
As part of my bachelors party somebody decided we need to kill a hog. After some research and advise, I purchased a Remington 700 SPS chambered in 7mm. The hog hunt didn't yield in any results; but, I caught the bug. Since, I have plans to go hog hunting again later this month and made a reservation with a couple of buddies for the opening weekend of deer season.
I look forward to learning some tips from this forum and hearing some good stories.
-Wes

My dad was always a hunter so I grew up around hunting. Started off with small game like Squirrel and Rabbit then one day I got a wild hair and bought me a 270Win and started going after bigger critters like Hogs and Deer.

I got into hunting when I was 2....my aunt bought me a toy gun(although that doesn't count). Then I got an airsoft gun and then a BB gun. I also got a little bow. I was 4. When I was 5, my dad took me to a hunt. I just sat there and when we saw a deer I went forward to the gun but my dad said this was different then the air guns. Then at 7YO I shot my first deer. Since then I've shot 10 more deer and 1 that wasn't recovered

Got into hunting through a buddy of mine. Moved to Austin from Dallas when I was in the 5th grade and started going to his ranch and hunting everything. My dad didn't grow up hunting, so I'm the first hunter in my family. 7 years have gone by and I'm just getting started

Welcome. Same progression as most of the other guys. Plinking quarters off fence posts with the uncle's .22 as a boy. Moved to hillbilly skeet (someone throws can into air + 12 guage), got my first shotgun in 8th grade (12 ga. Rem 800 Express) and my first centerfire in high school (8 mm Muaser). Been scaring dove, ducks, yotes, hogs, deer, etc. ever since.... Again, Welcome to the THF.

I grew up in a hunting family but haven't always had the resources to hunt . My dad would build stock tanks for people in exchange for a place to hunt for the season. I was able to get my first couple of deer when I was 13 and 14 thanks to my Uncle and cousin for allowing me to hunt.

My father never took me hunting, I got into hunting by hanging out with some high school buddies that hunted. I saved up some money and bought my first rifle, a JC Higgns tube feed .22 simi-automatic. A couple of years later I was invited by in-laws to go dove hunting and I bought a Mossberg 12ga. bolt action 3 shell clip with adjustable choke. Been hunting ever since.

Welcome
I was the first and only son of a father who loved to hunt and fish. For the first few years, he gave up all of his S. Texas and Mexico hunting, not wanting to be away from me. Wanting to take his son hunting so bad, he'd wrap me in a blanket and take me to the duck blind at age 3. At age 5, he started taking me deer hunting in the Atchafalaya basin, it was close to home and relatively easy. At age 7, my dad took me to S. Texas for the first time, I have been hunting the same ranch ever since.

My best friend, doubledrop14, (we met in 2nd grade) and his family are HUGE hunters (understatement... they own a WT breeding facility, can be seen on MossBack taking huge bulls as well as a recent african safari hunt for lion that was on tv the other day, etc etc). During hunting season, I felt left out so I bought a bolt-action .410 from my uncle for 30-bucks and started hunting dove on another friend's ranch with my father. The next year I started hunting deer with doubledrop14. 19 year later and we're still best friends and still hunting together.
BTW, NIGHTBIRD, I got my motorhome off of your lease today, so I'm officially out of your hair.

I grew up fishing always wanted to try hunting but it was always just out of reach. Went on my uncles lease once to hunt deer once as a teen as well as dove hunting. Three years ago a friend from worked asked if I wanted to get on a lease and I was hooked. Got my first doe then looking forward to my first buck this season.

My dad never hunted, but he ran cattle and had great hunting property. Our neighbor was a deer hunter and he started taking me when I was old enough to shoulder a rifle because that was the only way my old man would let him hunt our land.
that's how I started deer hunting.
I learned to find and shoot squirrels on my own with a 410 and later a 22.
then I a friend invited me to go duck hunting and I started to forget about deer and squirrels.

I grew up in a ranching family, so there were always guns around. I really don't remember "getting into" hunting -- it just seemed like it was something we always did.

I don't really recall, it's just always been a part of my life. My first memories of hunting were terrorizing small game with a pellet gun and went from there. My first actual deer hunt was when I was 12. We didn't even see a deer much less shoot one, but that was all it took for me. My first deer harvest was when I was 16 and it's been all downhill from there.
Welcome aboard!
