Olympic recurve archers compete at 100 meters which is just shy of 120yds... and they aren't pulling 70lbs. A 127 yard kill shot is very doable in the right environmental setting with a well-practiced archer behind the sights. Heck, there's youtube video of a guy whacking a pronghorn in AZ at 105...

I killed a small buck at about 75 yds once. I had just started bowhunting I was probably 14 yrs old but a heck of a shot. I could not judge distance at all. We were hunting a day lease outside of LLano in the 80's. Dad and I were walking along and there as buck laying down just off the road. I guessed the deer as pretty far a way. I had a 20 and 30 yd pin. I aim a little high with the 30 yd. The arrow hit the ground about half way to the animal. The ground was hard and rocky. The arrow skipped like a flat rock nailed the deer right behind the shoulder. The deer took off and ran about 40 yds before falling over dead. No one believes this story except Dad and he only does because he was standing next to me when it happened.

Actually, its 70 meters. Here is some info:

"This isn't darts; you have to be accurate at 70 meters, the distance between the shooting line and the target. Traveling at about 150 miles an hour, the arrow takes a fraction of a second to hit the target, compared to the several seconds that a booming football punt takes to travel that far. The ground in between is grassy in order to spare the arrowheads if they miss the target. The entire competition area is called a range; the individual firing zone is a lane. Wisely, the spectator seating in any archery arena does not include a grandstand behind the targets."

"On an Olympic target, you're aiming for the inner gold circle, worth 10 points. The score then descends by 1 point in each half of the colored rings as you move toward the outside: outer gold 9, inner red 8, outer red 7, inner blue 6, outer blue 5, inner black 4, outer black 3, inner white 2, outer white 1. If your shots land on the periphery, you should be heading back to summer camp. The rings are all 4.8 inches wide, and each scoring zone - half a ring divided by a line - is 2.4 inches wide. The entire target sits on an easel-like stand, placing the "bull's-eye" 4 feet 3 inches off the ground."

Why would anybody even want to shoot at an animal at any great distance? Sounds like some people I've known in my life with a gun:

I totally agree. We as hunters should respect our quarry enough to do our best to make a clean kill shot. Or simply pass on the shot. My opinion.

Personally and just my opinion, I got into bow hunting to kill something quietly and up close. Kind of hard to do that with a rifle and really as much fun.

About 1500 yards from a helicopter using a general electric minigun. Actually killed 6 NVA in one 3 second burst.

i shot a tick off the back of a dragonfly that was flying 103.45 yards away.

but seriously, i shot a doe at 63 and the next day missed one at 14.. i was younger and dumber. 45-50 would be the fartherest id take on a deer now

A boar is an intact male hog......
A "Barr" is a male hog that has been cut and released......
A lot of folks cut em and turn em loose so that they'll be sterile and grow bigger faster without multiplying like rats. They gain weight like CRAZY! And taste a lot better after a few months of being a "Barr"

Like i said, it was late late afternoon and I ranged it at 40 yards which is my max and it was dusky enough that it didn't range right or I hit a tree by mistake.... I'm not sure.

I whacked that deer by pure luck in the bottom 2" of his brisket and it may have gone 10 feet before falling over.


My coolest shot was at 9 yards in kansas. The buck went 10 yards and stood next to a DEEP creek while pumping dry. The blood was gushing out both sides and the morning sun was shining through the trees like a stained glass window. (not meaning to be gorey just telling story so you can picture it). He stood there and coughed a few times which made for a bigger stained glass and then fell into the VERY deep creek.

Ever tried to get a #220 Kansas deer out of a 25' flat walled creek???

100 yards dead bulls eye on my block. Me and a friend were just screwing around. my pens only go to 60 and im not comfortable at that distace at all. We walked back to 100 and i just pulled back aimed about 15 feet over the target and let her rip. Longest shot on a animal was about 30 yards.
