The latest edition of Outdoor Life lists Guthrie TX. as one of the top 10 towns for whitetail deer hunting in the entire country. Talked about its location between the Wichita and Salt Fork of the Brazos.
I found it interesting since I don't recall that much discussion about Guthrie or King Co. on the forum.
Anybody hunt that area?
What is your opinion?

Well I know they have a nice ranch there called the 6666....I have seen some nice deer driving through....I think the 6666 is a huge ranch and it would not suprise me if they took some monsters out of there. I drove through there last week and there was huge fire...I measured 15 miles of burned area on the east side of Guthrie on both sides of the road...

somebody from the 6666 threw some money at outdoor life, i'm sure. i can think of a dozen towns in texas that would be better towns than guthrie as far as whitetails are concerned:
cotulla
freer
llano
mason
hondo
san saba
bandera
junction
sabinal
uvalde
kingsville
pearsall
just to name a few.
ttha did do an article about a shrimper who hunts in king county, and he did shoot some whoppers, but he was quoted as saying sometimes he went DAYS without seeing a single deer.

I hunt in King cty on the PItchfork ranch which neighbors the 6666's. I wouldnt see the 6's throwing money at outdoorlife for that, mainly because the 6's doesnt do any commercial hunting. Youve gotta think between these two ranches they have almost a million acres to them selves. The Pitchfork does get hunted, but only about 10% of the whole ranch is leased out. As far as free range whitetails and mule deer go I dont think there's any better place in Texas myself. There's deer that actually die of old age there and you cant say that about too many places in Texas. On my lease alone everybody that shoot a buck scored between 150 to 178.

Yeah, the 6666 isn't really hunted so that article kinda makes no sense even though I haven't read it. Maybe they just found the county with the least amount of high fence.  Or some idiot saw King Co. and thought it was where the King Ranch was... I would say though, if I was to hunt one single place in Texas for all game, out there would be it.

scratch all the hill country basket rack counties...there are some massive whitetails in the guthrie area....i hunt in kent county and in 3 years i have never hunted that i dont see a deer.....my place is about 30 minutes from guthrie.

Don't anyone get to thinking that south Texas is the only place for big Bucks.
All those counties across from Archer/Baylor/Young and Throckmorton and back to the west and northwest have some really big deer roaming in them.
Their problem is they don't have the total numbers of deer, nor the same amount of hunting pressure.
I am not a Trophy Hunter by any means, but I do know what a Trophy Deer looks like, and I have seen plenty all thru that area that were 150 class and much bigger. JMO.

Does the article specify whether or not its a top ten list of "trophy" deer towns or just pure opportunity towns...I agree there are some really nice deer in the northern part of the state as well but if its a number's list i cant see that.

For mostly FREE RANGE conditions, quality of bucks taken (mule deer and whitetail), other game, prices $$$, the panhandle (in the guthrie area) has the state beat hands down...
If you want numbers of deer head to llano, brady, etc.
If you want to spend a fortune head to south Texas.

If you haven't hunted the Hill Country counties lately, you're missing some outstanding bucks that have been taken. A little management, even on low fence places can do wonders. We're seeing and taking bucks that have scored 150-160 BC in the past 5 years in Gillespie/Kimble counties.

Bingo, the 6666 is all about horses and cattle. Why would they trow money at Outdoor Life to print that? So a bunch of YUPPIES buy up every 200-300 acre pasture around them? Doubtful.

The article is actually a sidebar to the main article about the "Best Places to Live" listing the top 200 towns for hunters and angler.
The sidebar is just a list with a sentence or two about each of the "Top 10 Whitetail Towns"
FYI, Lufkin,TX. made the top 3 cities in the South and #35 in the top 200.

Ya'll are right! I am 20 minutes from the 6666's and 10 miles from the pitchfork. There are no big deer here...dispell that rumor for me guys.....I paid $225 an acre for my ranch 10 yrs ago and now its appraised at $750 an acre...mainly because of hunting....I want to buy more so please let everyone know that big deer here is kinda like the chucacabra legend!!!!!!  I promise I have never seen a big one!

name one town north of waco that is synonomyis (sp?) with whitetail deer hunting?
throckmorton and shackleford counties were big back in the late 90's but i haven't heard much about them, good or bad, in a long while.
not hurt anyone's feelings who dont' hunt there, but when people from out of state think texas deer hunting, they think hill country and south texas, with the panhandle getting an good nod now and then, not lufkin or guthrie

I would say from management experience around the state that Bosque county can produce some of the best whitetail habitat in the state of Texas when the cedar is controlled. Period. And that county is north of Waco.

thats dependent on the cedar control. alot of areas have good potential, but for one reason or another dont have monster deer. i don't know what county hagerman is in, but outside of that, most of your bruiser deer, high fence or low, are comming from down south.
not to turn hijack this thread about how south texas is so much better than the rest of the world, but most of your good hunting is going to be west of 35 and south of austin

Ill give it to you that south Texas has great deer...just sometimes you south Texas boys have got to look outside the box a little...More management $$$ are being spent in a lot of areas outside of south Texas now and I think we are in for a suprise...Look at the history of the $$$ spent down south and other areas. Also, management techniques that came along with those $$$ are now being implemented all over.

i agree that texas as a whole can and will be a great state for whitetail deer in the near future, not being limited to south texas. west texas is quickly becoming the working mans brush country, and we will see bigger and bigger deer come outta there evey year. i hunt were the animals are, be it south,east north or west. east texas is great for ducks, south is my deer country, the hill country is where i go for exotics, and if i ever want to go pheasant or quail hunting, or may be a bruiser mulie, then i will go north. never been way out west, but there is great mule deer and excellent auodad in that country. texas is just a great state for hunting. each area of the state has its niche. except for the dallas area, ain't seen much come outta there

There are a good number of monsters taken in King county. I have been looking for a place there for several years, but hunt in Dickens County since I don't want to spend the cash for a lease on the fork. I almost considered last year, but found one for my wife and I for a little less money.

there are good deer just about everywhere,but not as many in most places. but it depends on what you consider a good deer and what you are expecting. you hear those stories all the time about a guy who has a lease down south and during christmas is unable to get down there,so for laughs hunts in his back yard and ends up shooting the best buck of his life,like that one a few years back in the piney woods.
