Well, it's a geographic thing then. Where I grew up in Kansas, the deer wouldn't touch the Purple top turnips until a freeze. Probably got to do with all the ag we have up there. After the cool weather clover browns up, the deer really concentrate on the growing soybeans and a few other crops. By the time the beans are brown, they hit the harvested corn fields and acorns on the creeks. Very easy to pattern them once you understand their food preferences.

In the Texas Hill Country for many years turnips were used to sheep/goat grazing due to the fact they were so cheap and you could add them into a small grains food plot. I think the deer were used to them and just developed a taste no matter what stage of growth.

I'm looking to plant a series of small plots in NW Coleman county. Our property has several cleared fields that used to be planted in winter wheat but have not been planted in about 6 years now. We were thinking of discing up a few areas and just planting wheat but would there be a combination that might be more productive? I'm planning on asking the local feed/seed people but i'm assuming they might recognize my limited knowlegde and make recommendations based on what they need to clear off the shelves. any advice would be appreciated.

The turnips turn from a starch to a sugar after the freeze.

Schpanky, the first thing I would do is a soil test then ask the Ag agent what grows well in your area.

You can also talk to guys at Turner Seed in Breckenridge after you get your soil samples.
