I am having a problem with deer getting into the hog trap before the hogs and getting stuck in there. Someone told me to sour the corn with diesel next time and the deer wouldn't touch it. Does this really work and will hogs go after it?

I have seen deer caught in traps that had diesel soaked corn. It doesn't work.
The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Corn won't really sour or soak up much diesel unless it is cracked. The hogs will come to the smell of the diesel if you only use it. I use whole milo instead of corn. I just soak an old rag(s) in it or burnt oil and hag it in the trap. Sour ground milo or wheat shorts instead of corn and they can smell that and won't have near the deer problems. You can also stack a few brushy limbs infront the opening in the trap that the hogs will get thru if they want.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Yep. I actually have a bunch of barbed wired running criss-cross on the front of my hog trap. Keeps the deer and cows out, but the pigs just push through the little openings.

Soaking corn in diesel ought to be against the law for sure and prob is if any migratory bird ever got into it, shows a lack of common sense and a huge disrespect of the land, game animals and water of Texas. Who would want to eat a hog or deer or turkey or goose with diesel soaked corn in its stomach?? Anybody who owns a ranch or leases out to hunters ought to make this a instant termination clause in a lease if discovered for sure, use a trap that does not trap deer and leave the top open so they can get out if your having problems, no excuse for this groundwater and game bird and animal abusing advice. If it does not hurt them let the guy who does it cook a pot of diesel soaked corn and and eat it on line pr pour it down his water well or in his tub to prove it is my view. Diesel is full of benezene a known cancer causing agent, why would you knowing pour it on something a living animal could eat and also get rained on and find a way to a water well or wash into a ground tank to kill fish??

Tried it several times and everything still eats it anyway. The hogs sure like it but everything else still eats it.

I am with SHEDHUNTER.....diesel has no use in the hunting world...Ground contamination is a Hell of a lot more important than hunting of any sort...

a little torn here.. which is worse? a few drops of diesel or eliminating a massive hog population with the ability to destroy big dollars worth of crops and land and contaminate water sources?? Not saying i support dumping gallons of diesel directly on the ground, but maybe use in a controlled way to eliminate the possibility of contaminating natural resources.

We squirted our hog trap water soured corn with diesel to keep birds and coons from wiping it out. We never poured straight liquid diesel on the ground, so everyone just take it easy, a few drops of diesel aint gonna change the ecosystem or contaminate the ground water. I am sure noone is dumping straight diesel on the ground in large amounts, who could afford that? What's next,I guess you guys will say Obama is a good christian boy and is good for our economy too??

Are you guys who are worried about what a hog eats from Texas? Heck, I don't know what they won't eat..including carrion, ect.. they have a rather unique digestive system...and don't sweat... You surely don't think they only eat your feed and others at feeders...Don

Years ago we had a deer get into a hog trap. The trap was made out of cattle pannels and had no roof. It went in door but just jumped out when it was done eating the corn that had been sprayed with diesel before being placed out for bait.

A little bit of diesel is not going to poison the world. Diesel is "natural". It is a component of crude oil which came out of the ground. Diesel is biodegradable. Benzene is biodegradeable. The diesel consumed by a hog is quickly metabolized to other chemicals. You are exposed to benzene every time you put gas in your car. The Ag Extension Service advocates using diesel in controlling brush. I'm not advocating careless use of chemicals. But you have to consider the amounts. You seem a little paranoid.

The best bait I've found is rotten fruit. Bananas and apples work best.
coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.

We were not using diesel to keep deer from eating it, it just seemed to slow down the crows, coons, and squirrels. It was my grandpas recipe, and who am I to tell a 70 year old man he is wrong, bless his soul!

I have sprayed brush w/ stale 2-Cycle mixtures. Nothing eats it but the hogs come a running.

Just use a rag with a little deisel on it. It doesn't have to be a consumable amount to be effective, all you are trying to do is get them to smell it. Soak a rag in deisel, wring it out, and then put it in a coke bottle with a bunch of holes in it and tie it to the top of the cage. Nothing eats it, none gets on the ground, and yet it is still doing it's job attracting hogs for you.

but, but, but, the diesel is EVAPORATING from the rag! Hydrocarbons are being emitted into the atmosphere! Eegad! The ozone layer is threatened! The hogs and songbirds will be exposed to benzene!!
