The only Shell capacity regulations in Texas for hunting are for Migratory game birds which is a Federal restriction across all states. ^Disco^

...on deer and such you are restricted to 5 ... I've heard this before from a hunter much older than myself. He was surprised when I (later) pointed the error out to him after a look through the guide book. Was the 5 round limit an actual regulation at some point in TPWD history? i think is was at one time.

if you use guides/service some guys will get their pantys in a bunch at even mentioning semi auto firearm. Read … http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/u...nee#Post3314623 While some might consider semiauto a "non-sporting" , many other guides have no problem with such weapons. In real life you may want a follow up shot. Bolt action rifles make it more difficult for quick follow up. Somebody will jump on me now and say that "real hunter need only one shot". True and not true. How many times you actually did a perfect heart shot? You can do one shot and then track animal for quarter to half of a mile. Or do quick follow up, and it drops there immediately. Unless you are a pro sportsman or army sniper, you have slim chance of decent follow up with bolt rifle. So my opinion is semi autos are fine in all areas where they are legal. Make sure your ammo is adequate for the game, and dont carry 30rd magazine to deer hunt. You will need 2-3 rounds max. On youtube you can find guys hunting deer with .223, but I dont think its adequate for the game. If you guide does not like you or your AR, well, there are plenty of areas and ranches who will gladly accomodate responsible hunter.

It seems like more people should read the hand book under means and methods before giving out false information Magazine Capacity (number of shells/cartridges allowed): There are no restrictions on the number of shells or cartridges a legal firearm may hold when hunting game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds, see Legal Shotgun). http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/fish_hunt/hunt/means/ That ^^

I don't think it was. Most 30/30's would have been illegal if it were if you left the plug in. i thought i read a rule way back in the day about 5 rounds. i always hunted with a bolt action so i never had to worry about it so i'm probably wrong. or maybe it was for another state. anyways you shouldn't have to worry about it now.

Let me start with a disclaimer that I'm not trying to start anything, but I saw this post and wanted to ask the following question. Is hunting with a .223, which some consider too small for deer, any more likely to cause the deer to be maimed vs. someone hunting with a bow, or crossbow? My point is, many feel that a well place arrow is sufficient for deer hunting, so why wouldn't a well place .223 round be ok. I've heard it repeatedly that .223 is too small, but I guess I really don't understand why it's too small for deer. For the record, I gun and bow hunt, so I don't want the bow hunters to flame me for my question. Joe

it's not too small, some people may not be comfortable shooting deer w/ a .223 and choose a larger caliber if they feel they cannot be faily accurate. personally I have shot many deer and hogs w/ a .223

.223 will kill deer all day long, they are light skinned easy to kill animals. When I have used GOOD ammo (75 grain OTM/Tap/Mk262ish) I have never lost a hog with it either. Probably killed over 100 hogs with .223/556. Only lost ones were running/rushed shots, or when I used M855 or other types of FMJ.

personally I have no objections to use .223 hunting deer, only concerns. One has to be sure of a shot placement. If you miss sweet spot with smaller, less energy rounds, deer will not go down immediately. Most likely hunter will have to track deer. With larger caliber the energy of a hit alone may drop deer, allowing you a follow up. Or shock of impact may take that deer down completely. My original post stated that "in my opinion" .223 is small if you miss a sweet spot. The argument was "to use or not to use AR", and I am in favor "To Use" Caliber is the choice of a hunter.
