Shot my first deer at 11 with a 30-30. It was a small 8 pointer that is still proudly hung on my wall.

I got a late start on hunting (grew up in South Florida).....I was 20 and killed a doe with shotgun. I started my daughter a little earlier she was nine and killed a young deer with excellent character. She was using her mom's 45 caliber muzzle loader. Here is her pic of her first deer (posted before)...

I come from a fishing family and never learned to hunt. As a result, I am 27 and still haven't gotten my first deer! Sad, I know.
I am going out this year for the first time and just attempting to learn on the fly (after plenty of reading). I hope I don't have to wait until I am 28... Don't feel bad. My dad wasn't a hunter, so I was well into my teens before I started hunting. And it wasn't until I met my wife in my late teens that I was able to hunt with guys who really knew how. I had moved to Texas and must have been close to 30 before I shot my first deer. IMO, guys who take up the sport as adults often find themselves more knowledgeable and skilled that their adult peers simply because they've put more time and effort into learning and studying the sport and all that goes with it. I mean, how many eight-year-old kids are interested in reading about deer behavior?

Killed my first deer when I was a freshman in highschool. It was a doe and I killed it with my Grandfather's 30.06.

I was 10, killed a spike in Nacogdoches Co. My dad and I where sitting in a box stand and a doe and the spike came out. They stayed about 100 yards out forever. Finally they came into the food plot. I managed to hit the top and bottom of the window with my gun barrel trying to stick it out the window. I had never shook so bad. Buck Fever had me!! Pulled the shot bad. Hit the little spike in the spine just above the flank. Shot 5 more times at it and never cut a hair.
I had to shoot it with dad's 3006. We still laugh about it today.

I took up deer hunting late in life and only do it on a casual basis (no lease or pricey guided hunts). Shot my first deer at 43 on a TPWD drawn hunt. I put in my footwork on the area to be hunted, took a stand at what I thought would be a good place, and had a doe walk up on me within an hour. I shot her at 23 feet with a Marlin 308ME and dropped her in her tracks.
I doubt I will ever be so lucky again.
