Well, we have come to the decision that we are no longer going to keep our deer lease, and this time for good. We sat down as a group (4 of us) and decided to let it go. Ever since we go off our lease in Coleman that we were on for 23 years it just hasn't been the same. Shady land owners, even more shady out fitters etc. The reasoning for my father and I is that we just don't have time anymore, work has increased an insane amount (not griping one bit about that) and it's just unrealistic to keep a place if were never going to be able to go! One of the other guys is getting off because he just had his first grand baby (triplets at that) and he wants to watch them grow up. We have decided that we will now go a couple times a year on a hunt at a big ranch, for exotics and what not. Have any of yall ever made this decision? I know it's going to suck not having a place to just go hang out at the drop of a hat, but it's a waste if were not able to put the amount of time in it to get the quality of deer we want, just my opinion... Thank yall for the info!

i would die if i didn't have a place to go whenever I wanted to.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Luckily all my buddies have leases, so it's time for payback from every weekend they went with me! I'll still be going somewhere, just won't be "mine".

I'm hearing of this more and more lately - maybe because of my age bracket and when you have just old guys on the lease, the work seems harder to do and schedule. One group of hunters I talked to last year did something a bit out of the norm. There had a lease for 5 guys, all older. One of the gentlemen died (early at 52) and the remaining guys sat down had the same talk that y'all did. It was hard work and they all were very busy with their lives outside deer hunting, although they still enjoyed it a lot. What they did was chip in together and bought the 5th spot and found a young man, just starting out in life, and offered the spot to him free of charge. The catch was that he had to do the lion's share of the work. They were very lucky and found a responsible ag (or maybe it was wildlife major) who fit the bill. When I talked it was December (near XMAS) and they said it had worked out better than they could have hoped for. The young man, Brian I think his name was, was so excited to have a place to hunt, that he filled ALL their feeders for them. Kept the camp cleaned. Even turned on the heat in prep of their arrival. He was much closer to the lease (almost a local) and was there frequently to check on things, hog hunt, and gave reports all during the year. It worked out so well, that they all agreed he deserved a bonus and let him bring one of his friends over XMAS to shoot a late season buck. Just something to consider - although I imagine the supply of Brians is limited.

I have thought about it, but the thought was brief. I have a good lease with good folks and a great ranch foreman. I have been on it 19 years and some of the guys are like family. I am busier now than I have ever been, but for me that is all the more reason to have a place that I can go to "escape". Also, I want my kids to have the experiences that I did. I want them to have the opportunities and learn about wildlife and nature by experience instead of through a book. I want them to be exposed to other people that think similar. My

thinking more and more about reducing the leases from 2 to one. The expanse, work and time are the main reasons.

If there were any young kids in our family, then we would not even be thinking about this. But as of now, were all grown so we don't have to worry about it...
It's going to suck this year, but I think we will get used to it just fine!

I enjoy the people I am with on my lease probably more than the lease itself. I would never see half of them without it, we are scattered all over the state.
My kids love it too, I can't imagine not having a lease even if we get up and move ever so often.

Praying for you Ken.
I'm getting on a lease for the first time in 25 years. I used to lease a bow spot for $45 a season, October only. I'm having to step up a lot! Anyway, my son and I hunt together. I value the time with him. Our days off are weekdays so we head down and are typically the only ones there. I accompanied him a few times last year and shot a few hogs. Decided to bite the bullet (broadhead) and get on when one of their guys had to step away.

I had to give mine up so the wife could go back to school. She's working a part time, low paying job. I'll just have to hold out until she finishes school and get's employed again. In the meanwhile I'll be pining away, dreaming of big rutted up bucks.
