I love hog hunting. On the other hand, when I saw the title of the post I was going to guess the Pine Beetle, or other invasive insect.
I love hog hunting. I don't want to see them eradicated. I'm sorry that they tear up private property and cost ranchers money, but I'm doing my part by hunting public land trying to take care of them there where I don't have to pay. If they are smart enough to stay on private property waiting on the corn feeder to go off, not much I can do about that.
I also have a place that I hunt that I have to pay to hunt that is over-run with pigs. The rancher has never once complained about the damage they are doing to his land. When I am counting out that cash to pay him to hunt there is always a smile on his face. I don't think for a minute that he wants hogs eradicated. Nope. It is a business for him and he is doing quite well.
I don't think we will ever be rid of hogs. I think they are entrenched and will not be going away any time soon. If we can't eradicate the Japanese Pine Beetle, we certainly can't eradicate feral pigs. Like my signature says, they are a plentiful target for the off-season.
On a more comical note, I'd say Texas #1 enemy is/are politicians.
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

I dunno, I don't buy everyone saying they want them all gone.
I know that they're destructive, cause millions of $$$ in damage every year, etc. Yeah, i get all of that.
But i know that if the hogs were completely wiped out tomorrow, i mean not one single hog left, forever....lots of ya would be very sad, because one of your favorite animals to hunt no longer exists.
Two animals I want extinct...hogs and yotes. Wait tell you have to cut a half eating calf that got hung up in its momma... I would be happy if there wasn't ever a hog or hog sign seen by me the rest of my life

I'm pretty much a meat hunter first. That being said, I'll shoot a hog and fill the freezer the same way that I would a deer. Sure, if they were gone, we'd hunt coons or something in the off season. Thing is...I've eaten coon meat...I didn't hate it...but I sure like pig alot more.
I believe we can control them, though. We just need to get as many people as possible across the State on the same page regarding this issue. Those who refuse to shoot them because they hate them so much but sit and grip because they're not gone are not helping to improve the situation. If we could get every deer hunter across the State of Texas to harvest atleast 1 hog before they harvest a deer, we'd see a noticable difference, I believe. There are some, like myself, that would harvest several. Just food for thought.
Definitely true statement on politicians, for sure.

I think the ethics police is a major problem... when you want them gone there's nothing wrong with just making sure you get lead in them. I've had many friends who want to come out and kill a few with bows, but that's inadequate when rifles are available and they can be killed in quantity.

I would be happy if there wasn't ever a hog or hog sign seen by me the rest of my life Oh I definitely dont doubt there are people that genuinely want them gone, like you and rifleman, and many farmers/ranchers that truly suffer from the detrimental impacts of hogs. I know personally several folks that really hate them with a passion. My comment was not directed at any one person. It was more of general statement, in regard to all the people i see all over the internet (not just the THF) that pose in pictures with their high dollar ARs and all the hogs they shoot, and then some of these same folks then talk about how the hogs need to be eradicated.

I'm with BOBO, they just need to go away. On my cousins place in Jonesboro, he found hogs eating the tail off a new born calf, mama was still too weak to defend him. got rid of a few that day. His nieghbor, an old man about 75, was riding a 4wheeler in his coastal field checking his corn and cows out. Hogs had rooted the trail he was on and before he could react, his 4wheeler turned over on top of him. If my cousins wife hadn't of been checking on her own cows he would of died right there. He was in the hospital for a week, broke his pelvis. They root under the pecan trees on the river bottom, doesn't sell near as many as he use to. Two years ago he shot a deer and before he could get to it hogs were eating it, he didn't have enough bullets to shoot'em all and they were not going to give up that dinner either. Hogs just need to go away.

Nah, they're too much fun to hunt. It's too bad they tear stuff up but I'm with Kawabuggy here-it's another way to make a buck for some landowners. There's good and bad that comes with them, in some places way more bad than good! However, I'm glad to hunt them and actually like pig hunting more than deer hunting. I like predator hunting more than deer hunting though so that makes me a little different mindset than most!
They're here to stay though, they adapt so well that we won't be able to get rid of them. Might as well have some fun...

I will say hogs hunting does provide entertainment...I was fishing baffin this week...saw a few while running the shoreline...got to our spot and jumped in and here comes the chopper... Watched them shoot hogs for about 45 min. Pretty cool..even saw smoke from the barrel of a gun.

I was fishing Lake Somerville last year, anchored back up in a cove catfishing, when a group of at least 40 hogs came out of the brush and down to the water right before sundown, not any more than 30 yards from me. Oh what fun that could have been...
They are all over Lake Somerville.

Lets not forget about sniper john and his leg. Didnt someone say that it was feral hog bacteria? Hogs that wallow in the ruts and ditches of the road certainly contributed to the kinds of bacteria that was in the water from the road that infected a wound on my leg, but my tissue samples showed 7 kinds of bacteria involved and 3 or 4 more unidentified that lead to my necrotising faciitis aka bacterial flesh eating disease. Fecal bacteria from hogs probably contributed, but it was not the sole bacteria putting off toxins destroying tissue in my leg.

I just watch as we run past them....already seen some good bucks, nilgi, yotes, three big toms, and several yotes. But it really was cool being in waste deep water sipping on a cold one slinging Croaker, and watching hogs get shot from the heavens.
