My hunting buddy is from Sierra Blanca, and his brother is a prof. trapper there...we used to go bird hunting some yrs. on the Baylor Ranch 200,000+ acres...saw some goats, no deer ...when questioned Mark told me that the few deer are around some water tanks and Sierra Blanca Mountain on Christmas Holidays...when there is no Muley seasaon...said there are some good ones but very scarce...Hill Country still full of the goats..some even may weight more than 65lbs...DD

When I came down I10 last week from Ft. Stockton I noticed that it was pretty green out there. I also noticed the Boone & Crockett grasshoppers all over the highway. They made a mess of the front of my truck.
Also, I didn't see near as many dead deer along the side of the highway as in years past. Of course that could have more to do with the time of year. Last time I went out that was in December of '05. There was quite a few dead deer along the highway then.

My guess is that those who did not feed last spring and summer will be disapointed this year.

On highway 90 between dryden and Marfa it's hard to dodge all the deer, elk and Mulies but then again that Hwy seems to be a magnet for wildlife.

Whats all the talk of rain? I live in Odessa and work in Crane...only moisture is in seat of my FRC's! If I work till right time I see a few mulies heading north on 1601 south of I20. Hog population must be down...which is good thing!

I hunt 20 miles west of Sonora off of I-10. Cameras on our lease look promising. Deer don't seem to be hitting protein as well as corn. The deer are there. They just seem to be laying low and in cover due to all the growth.

Drove from Odessa to Grandfalls to Iraan to Sterling City to Colorado City Thursday afternoon/eveningin the 60 degree rain. Really pretty country around Iraan. Country appears to responding to the rain. Bar ditches look like East Texas in places.
Saw three deer. One was a really nice 8 point (maybe 120-130)about 10 miles south of Sterling .

I used to have a lease about 8 miles West of Sterling( 12,000 acres), we didn't have a "ton" of deer, but the bucks we had where nice!! Buck to doe ratio we tried to keep at 1-1 per the owners management program. This was in the early 2002-2005 though.

Running a risk by even asking the question again, but I posted this thread before the season about the very low number of deer I had seen this spring and summer driving West Texas roads. Made the route from Sonora, Ozona, Iraan, Crane, Odessa earlier this week and did see 5 does, no bucks. Be honest, did you see more or less deer this year at your West Texas lease than you usually do?

Saw 6 deer within a mile of Odessa city limits yesterday on 385. I was going too fast to see if they were mules deer or whitetails and there was too much traffic to stop and turn around.

HWY_MAN these boys don't know what H2S is. Back in early 60's we lost a engineer trainee at Chalk when he crawled up to gauge a frac tank. Doctors said he was dead before he hit the ground. It can be bad stuff.

Well, I hunt a little north of the area you're asking about, but our deer numbers are down about 40 - 50% from 2010. Still feeling the effects of the 2011 drought. Typically we have around 200 deer living on the 7000 acres I hunt and this year we had closer to 100. Antler growth was also down a bit from the average, although it was significantly better than last year's.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

On the bright side, if it rains, they will come bak stronger than before.
And, less competition will make antlers bigger!
