I offer full day guided alligator gar fishing trips. I usually fish on the Trinity River. All day from my perspective means safe light until about an hour and a half before dark. An average day will produce between 5 and 10 runs with 3 or 4 fish landed and legitimate chance of landing a trophy fish over 6 feet. I can not guarantee a fish but no effort will be spared in making the trip successful. I provide everything needed for the day including water, sports drinks, and bait/tackle. I run catch and release trips only. If a replica is desired measurements and photos can be taken for this purpose. I book trips now through mid October. I can accommodate up to three anglers per day, but I think it is best suited for 2. My daily rate for 1-3 anglers is $550.

Guys I have been with Dawson twice now. This is for sure some of the funnest fishing that ive done. The power of these fish is unbelievable. The boat is nice and the trip in itself is cool just going miles on the river. Dawson works his tail off trying to get you on a trophy.
I would recommend going if you never have.

Got this 120 pound fish out of the Sabine River Thursday afternoon when I had a little time to go solo. Lost 2 others in snags, both of them drag strippers like this one.

Good lord those are HUGE! I shot alot with with .22's and bows, but nothing that big! WOW!

I have heard that from many people over the years, both in regards to shooting them and the size reference as well. For me it is all catch and release. Not knocking you, or what you do just throwing that out there for the general public.

you know whats funny, i was on the lake last saturday and caught a 4 inch baby gar at night under some lights. Amazing how the get that big. I like the way you release them, i hate to see them kept and throw away like some people do. What type of bait do you use or do you snag them with a hook or somthing.

He doesn't snag, Cut bait etc up to a 1lb. Do you remember the movie "Jaws" when the shark hits and the bait clicker starts running? Just like that

Alright, got some pictures from Sunday and Monday

Fished Sunday with a personal friend. Could not have asked for better activity out of the Alligator Gar, this will seem exaggerated but I promise it is not: We landed 15 alligator gar besides a couple blue cats. Around 30 runs total. 4 Alligator gar over 5' long, and the rest ranging from the high 3's up to just under 5'. Lost one over 6' at the bank.

Monday I fished with clients Manoj and Rodger, two really nice guys. Had a great time fishing with them. Despite the fish acting different than the day before we still landed 6 fish with the biggest being this fish of 80#'s or so, 5'7" long.

I still have some dates for May if anyone wants to go before the weather gets really hot. Have dates in June and July as well, thanks for looking and good fishing to all!

Man...that looks really fun. How long does it take to land one of those jokers???

Depends on the size, the big ones can last about 10-15 minutes, the small ones its over pretty quick since I use heavy gear. Its not a long fight but they usually jump, even the big ones. They thrash around and shake their heads often too. The smaller ones go crazy in the boat since they still have most of their energy when you land them.

Been a while since I put up some results for everyone to look at, hope this makes up for it. I will try not to be too long winded here.

Fished Monday with my friend Justin who is about to leave the state, so this was sort of a going out in a blaze of glory trip for him. Our results for the day were indeed 24 alligator gar landed as the title says, as well as 3 blue catfish which went 40#'s 30#'s and 25#'s. Of the alligator gar we caught 8 of them were over 5 feet long. We had a couple big fish get on, but they didn't stop to have their picture taken. We took pictures of the first 15 or so and after that just started unhooking them and putting them back so that we could get more. All fish caught except the buffalo we used for bait were put back to fight again with the majority of the alligator gar hooked in the mouth. We got rods out around 8:00 a.m. and fished until about 5:30, with a couple pauses to get more bait as we used a lot of bait. I think we could have passed 30 alligator gar, but we had to head in a little early because of some problems back home(all resolved and ok now). As "LUCK" if you want to call it would have it, on fish number 13 i got a hook in my thumb trying to get the hooks out. I was very fortunate that the hook bounced off the bone in my thumb and did not imbed in it, however I got to spend about 40 minutes with my hand in the ice chest trying to get the bleeding to stop, It must have gone a vein or something. Now for the good stuff, here are the pictures.

To date this is the most alligator gar I have landed in a single day, my next goal will be to top 30 with some fish over 100#'s thrown in the mix. Our fish ranged from 5'7" to 3' in length on this trip

Got the opportunity to work with TPWD doing some alligator gar fishing. Had my good friend Jason along as well as his friend John as well as my wife. Fish were not rolling much at all for the day we had but we got 3 anyway. Big girls just didn't want to eat from the buffet I put out, guess they were dieting? Anyway we had a good time relaxing in the shade in lawn chairs waiting on runs. Got a 4' fish a 4.5' and a 5'. What a trip with the 5'er, definitely the hardest I have ever worked for a single fish.

Within 20 minutes of getting set up on our first spot we got John his first alligator gar, a nice little 4'. Not a monster but a good way to get broke in, and not a bad way to break the ice for the day either. Fast forward some time, and we get a run for Jason. Jason sets the hook on his fish and for some reason the line breaks at the rod. There goes $10 worth of line in the river. Don't forget this broke line. About 45 minutes to an hour passes and we get a few more runs that end up dropping after getting around obstacles. The broken line has been about 150 yards down from our spot for about the last hour now, and I notice out of the corner of my eye that the float on it is moving slowly up the side of the river towards us, about 20 yards off the bank. We decide to go try and catch the loose line and tie off too it with a rod to see what is going on with this line. After circling around in behind this line and catching up to it I start looking for the end, only to find several problems: 1. It is longer than I thought 2. It is in the big motor 3. It is in the Trolling motor 4. It is tangled in another rod 5. It has a fish on it!
Panic quickly in issues as I try to figure out which of the tangled strands on my motor to cut and which to keep up with. After solving this problem it is on to the lines in the trolling motor, where the fish pops one of those. After cursing loudly I realize the fish is still on, this was one of the tangled lines. I finally calm down enough to cut the line not in use and untangle the line with a fish on it from the motor, all the while this is on film. Finally I successfully got the line with the fish on it singled out from the rest and with the trolling motor now untangled I follow the fish up the bank while tying this loose line to a rod and reel. This seems to take ages, but finally I get it done and hand the rod off to John for him to get gar #2 for him. After a short but scrappy fight I finally snare this fish and get it in the boat, what a relief. Without further delay here are some pics.

Had Jason and his two oldest Saturday, the kids each caught their first alligator gar and learned to respect a unique and worthy opponent.

I had Roger and Curt from Wisconsin here yesterday to do some alligator gar fishing. We got off to early start around 6:45 a.m. before the heat got up good. River is pretty low, but there were not any issues getting to some productive gar waters. My wife Kayla went along to help with pictures and whatever else was needed, lots of thanks to her for that. Now to the good stuff! We took off for one of my favorite spots first thing, and within about 15 minutes of getting set up we started getting runs. Missed a few fish before we got the first one of the day and Roger’s first alligator gar, a fish of about 4’. We also caught a couple soft shell turtles out of this spot, an all too common occurrence when river fishing. After a while we moved on to a different spot where there were several larger fish surfacing. Before we could get three rods out the first rod that we had set got a run on it, but unfortunately the line popped on the hook set worse still it there was no question it was a big fish, the rod fully loaded up and the fish didn’t move at all. We were all bummed about that, but the bites kept coming. We were using pretty large baits so we missed several smaller fish between hooking them up and the boat. Around 10:30 a.m. we got a slow run on one of the big baits we had out, while this fish was running another rod took off. At this point we were in the boat with 2 rods with active runs. Suddenly Curt’s fish rolled, we could see our bait in its mouth and at the same time Roger set the hook on is fish, there were now two nice sized fish on and hooked up at the exact same time! Pandemonium ensued! We soon realized that Curt’s fish was only hair lipped and had to get it landed first, hooks pulled but not soon enough for the fish, I already had it snared when they did. Roger’s fish was nice enough to calm down a little while I got Curt’s in the boat, and in short order we had two nice alligator gar in the boat! Roger’s fish went 60” and Curt’s was 68”, nice sized fish by most standards. Weights around 50# and 80# for these two. We got a few more runs as the day went, but by about 1:00 the activity slowed and although we continued to work at it no more fish were landed.

A couple good friends and I got together for some alligator gar fishing yesterday. The day started out with a couple hours of light rain, which really helped keep the temperatures down. We launched our boat just after daylight, and after a few minutes running up the river we stopped and started working on catching some fresh river bait. Within short order we had 4 smallmouth buffalo of the 1-3 pound size in the cooler and we started focusing in on the “reel” task at hand, catching some alligator gar! It didn’t take long to start getting runs with our fresh bait out, within about ten minutes of baiting up we had a scrappy 4’ class fish on the bank. A few more fish of this size were landed and then we moved on to another spot. At the next stop we managed a few fish, but not much was going on so we moved on. At our next stop we caught a few more 4’ class fish, and then landed a nice fish of 5’. By this time we had landed 8 fish, and it was only 11:30, so we had a pretty good day going considering we caught bait first. While I was away baiting a rod in the boat Jimmy got a nice slow run on one of the rods. When Jimmy set the hook the fish set the rod on Jimmy and the fight was on. Jimmy forgot to turn off the clicker when he engaged the spool, so I thought he had just forgot to engage the spool when I heard the clicker screaming and saw him holding the rod, however as I got closer to Jimmy and Richard I realized from the bow in the line that Jimmy was hooked up to a big fish. The fish was making a drag peeling run and all Jimmy could do was hold on. Finally the fish turned but it made several more drag peeling runs before we finally got a glimpse of a tail and got a good idea of just how big a fish it was. It took me three tries to snare on the fish, I nearly got taken for a swim the first time and the second the fish just swam through. On the third the fish was calm enough I was able to get the cable around the fins and bring the fish on the bank. This 7’2” fish had a girth of 38.25” and estimates out at 175#’s, the biggest fish Jimmy has ever caught of any species and the biggest him and Richard have ever seen in person of any species. Way to go Jimmy. Richard and I both got a fish over 5’ for each of us as well. A great trip for all of us.

I do whatever I can get scheduled for you as far as dates goes as long as I have some notice. I use my vacation time at work and whatever my days off are on shorter notice. Price is $550 for up to three as I said. As far as months go, April-November is good but weather has more influence on the bite in April, sometimes May, and then mid September on into November. June, July, and August are pretty much the same: hot, humid, and reliable fishing.
