By what you described and the pic i believe it to be a Hog Nose snake. Not venomous, but will scare stuff out of your body.

It's a water snake, not a cottonmouch/moccasin.

Maybe a blotched water snake, not a diamondback water snake, or a yellow belled watersnake, and definately not a cottonmouth
FKH!!!!

You probably need to ask a herpatologist.

Hell I call them mean [censored] snakes that look like rattlers. Got a tank in front of the house that was full of them. They are very aggressive. Shot 23 in about 20 minutes.

Really just looks like a Texas rat snake to me. They are known to be quite pissy.

It is classical water snake, post more pics if you have them. All water snake species have vertical lines that cover both lower and upper jaws. This sort of resembles a broad-banded watersnake. If you got a glimpse of the underside, and there were maroon splotches, then that is definitely what it is. All species of watersnakes are aggressive and strike when they feel threatened.
I do not think it is a cottonmouth, hog-nosed, or rat snake.

You probably need to ask a herpatologist. What does herpes have to do with snakes?

Did it have fangs? Small needle like teeth what.
One side note, NEVER put an armadillo in a paper feed bag.
