Has anyone ever built a metal frame blind with fiberglass panels? I'm curious how to build the fiberglass panels. I've thought about maybe using foam insulating sheathing with a fiberglass mat and resin over top. I'm curious to hear suggestions or first hand experiences.

Be careful when choosing your materials. If the foam sheathing that you're going to use is an encapsulated polystyrene product(EPS), you'll need to use an epoxy resin, rather than a polyester resin....or the resin will "melt" the foam unless you seal it first.

Most of your chopped strand mats consist of fiberglass roving, held together by a styrene binder. When the polyester resin is applied, the styrene binder is dissolved. Since EPS foam is mostly styrene, using a polyester resin wouldn't be a good idea.

Normally, when using epoxy resins, you'll use fiberglass cloth rather than a chopped strand mat. You could use a chopped strand mat but the epoxy resin wouldn't dissolve the styrene binder....instead, it would just encapsulate it.

You could use plywood or paneling as a substrate....it wouldn't matter which fibergalss you used then.

hilltop101 if you are still following this thread, check out this link for fiberglass info and supplies. Look for the "Learning Center" link under the categories section. Lots to learn there.

I plan to use this sheathing with polyester resin. The R value is pretty good, the foil backing will peel off if done gently, and polyester resin will not dissolve it. $7.98 per 4X8 sheet is cheaper than 1/2" CDX right now.

I have the same idea as you, and when I do build it it will be my first as well as my first fiberglass project. I'm afraid I can't help in technique or know how (yet).

This is correct.. I built one out of divincel. One thing to think about is Most of the commercial one are built with a chopper gun.

Only problem with epoxy doesn't do well with uv
