7mag, sold it, so next deer will be dropped by a 270 or 30-30.

i bet there are more folks on here that have killed a deer with a .22 than would admit

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

TT85...all the different calibers come from being a rifle looney starting at an early age. Killed my first WT with a 243 SAKO my GF sold me in 1967 after I "quituated" college finally. Spent 12+ years in the gun bidnizz as a Dallas based distributor and mfg'ers regional sales rep from the mid 70's to the late 80's and got to hunt as a customer's or factory guest & shooting lots of factory samples, as well as do bidnizz with almost every gunshop & distributor in 5 states...and used the exposure to do a lot of horse trading with stuff I picked up that would not sell in somebody's shop. I doan't play golf, cards, shoot archery, pistols or black powder and have pretty much quit bird hunting, although duck hunting was my first love. I quit fishing competively statewide when I got in the gun bidnizz too.

Unlike when I was out and about constantly for lots and lots of years, I always had some trade bait working, with 6-12 personal rifles of some sort available to deals with. These days I am down to a "hard" core of 4 hunting rifles, a Tikka T3 Hunter Grade 6.5 Swede, a Tikka T3 SS/syn 270, a 90's era Win M70 SS/syn 300WMg Classic Grade, and my new found fun gun in a 9.3x62 CZ 550 American, that was bought with the intention of going to Africa in 2002 for use as a light/heavy rilfe for daily use....and not have to put up with the abuse of a 375 H&H.

Or put another way I have a pair of light and heavy caliber blue/wood guns (the 2 metric calibers) and a pair of light & heavy caliber SS/syn guns (in US calibers). Truth be told I have almost always had a pair, or even multiple pairs or even sometimes matched pairs (or several caliber matched gun collections) in 270 & 300Wmg since the early 70's, since they are well matched in bullet flight characteristics. For example ...Golf clubs all swing alike from 2 iron thru 9 iron and that was the basis for a matched collection one time of 5 calibers...all in the same gun model & brand rifle. Well certain calibers and bullet weights do the same thing like a 270 130 gr'er & 300Wmg 165 gr'er, or a 270 150 gr'er & a 300WMg 180 or 200gr'er depending on the bullet used.

However since I started messing about 6-8 years ago with the older euro metrics I find that the 6.5x55 SE (aka the "updated high pressure "Swedish Express)& 9.3x62 Mauser - they also work well together, especially with modern powders and bullets...and I started swapping rifles again for a short spell until I ran out of money for toys again.

FYI the big mauser was invented the year before the American 30-06 was accepted by the US Army, in 1905, in Berlin by Otto Bock a noted German gunsmith of the day for use in Africa by the German & Dutch farmers for crop protection from elephants, cape buffalo & hippo's and other similar sized maurading critters and built on an inexpensive standard sized '98 Mauser action before the Boer War...but the Swede design goes back to 1894 when it was commissioned by the Norwegian & Swedish governments as their official military rifle & caliber...and continued in production until 1938 in updated designs. Just cause these calibers are really old don't mean they don't still work well on game within their limitations of effective range out to about 350-400 yards with todays powders and bullets. I am also a great believer in the old adage of "get closer" especailly at my age and seemingly continually failing state of grace these days !!! I am a living (so far anyway) testament to the idea that If I had known I was going to live this long... I'd taken much better care of myself.

I'm using the .270 caliber now and I'm loving it.

My old one owner Savage 99 lever action in .308 is my go to gun. When I open the safe, it always has it's hand up yelling pick me, pick me, pick me.

When I was younger my only deer rifle was a sporterized .303 British Lee Enfield. Now I pretty much only shoot a 7mm mag.

My grandpa gave me his 99 in 308 several years ago and I almost feel bad when I hunt with something else now!

Reason so many, dad, uncle and grandma had land and 4 cabins with 30+ hunters year round. Many wanted us to sight em in and hunt with em. Them does were a lot easier to head shoot with a scoped rifle. Out of 150 - 250 deer I've shot, only 3 were bucks except for cull spikes or oops spikes. First deer 10 point, basket rack, 2nd buck a 8 point, 109 b&c, 3rd buck 7 point whose horns shrunk when it hit the ground. The 109 b&c was old and didn't even make good chili meat. Can't get me to shoot a buck, unless I'd see one bigger than the 109 b&c.
Can't eat horns. Plus bucks were $$$$ for the ranch.

Waiting on a 260 Rem to get finished for my daughter, looking forward to seeing the results on deer and hogs. I hunt in very rough country where you dont want them to run very far.
