Hello,

Well this is the first time I can't find what I'm looking for by searching, so here it is. The land owner that I am currently leasing from is thinking of putting a small herd of sheep on the place just simply for the tax break. I am use to hunting around cows, and am no stranger to building feeding pens. I was wondering however, is this necessary with the sheep? I guess my question is simply what is standard procedure for hunting around sheep.

Thanks!
J.C.

build pens. sheep will eat more corn than the cows.

X2 plus the pen will keep them from hanging around the feeder waiting for it to feed. Build it out of hog panels and large enough to keep all the corn inside it also.

Noisy as heck. Should not have much a coyote or dog problem on that place with that many donkeys on it. Might be over grazed also if there are that many miniature donkeys if it more wooded pasture than open grassland.

Watch them sheep! Had a bunch of sheep on a lease I was on in San Saba years ago. They have/display a lot of characteristics of deer. Lot of things you can learn.

Make sure when building your feeder pens that you use wire-panels that are small enough that they can't get their heads stuck... Dead sheep stuck in feeder pen = mad rancher.

Experience.

Well I hope this goes a little better for me than it has for some of you, as I really like the place. Only time will tell I suppose. Thanks for all the advice and warnings!

Ask him how much he wants for the grazing rights and let it sit idle and rest the pasture for 2 yrs if he does not want to much.

You are the only one to admit getting it.

the problem is that the sheep eat pretty much everything, including what deer eat. The sheep outcompete the deer for the food. It's hard to have deer at the same time as sheep / goats unless you put out some major supplemental feed in your pens.

I've only hunted 1 place that had sheep on it. I asked them about it and they didn't have problems with them. They had feeder pens like everyone else is talking about.

Build good big pens, make sure the spinner does not throw corn outside the pen and feed year round. There has always been 150 or more sheep in this 800 ac pasture and we have taken some nice deer.

Big rams still have the ability to jump in a feed pen. I hunted around Barnhart and they weren't a huge problem when we first started hunting. The next year the foreman doubled the population of goats and sheep. Weren't as many big deer. Next year he added a third more and we saw no big deer. I was done after that year. I don't like them.
