I like my 06...barely kicks, so that isn't an issue like it to some of you nancy boys (it is a semi-auto though :grin). Have a 300 ultra mag that kicks about like a .223 with the muzzle break. I don't mind being "over-gunned" like some of y'all and you never know when you might go hunting for rabbit and run into a bear Must always be prepared

When the big bad bear attacks and I put one between his eyes and about the rest of the magazine on its head. After that I will resume my s***ing from the initial shock. These are the firearms...I would rather go with a slingshot or a Gamo Young Hunter air rifle. In that situation I would get the hell out of there or if its already on me I would stab it to death.

Isn't 30-06 the oldest out of MOST of the calibers mentioned? It is but the Mausers preceeded it by a few years. The 7X57 could be substituted anywhere the 7mm-08 is mentioned for performance and was Jack O'Conners wifes most often hunted with cartridge. The 8X57, 6.5 Sweede also came before the 30-06 or 30-03 which could be considered the parent cartridge for the 06. In just about any country what the military is using will become very popular. If there is any doubt look at the 45-70, 30-06, 308 and 223 The 30-06 served this country for over 50 years as the primary battle round and longer in some applications. Through 2 World wars and Korea. Long time and a lot of hunters became familiar with it in their service of this country

Yes. Undoubtedly the finest cartridge ever. It'll kill anything from Kodiak to squirrels to Japs and Germans. Ammo is everywhere. Don't trust me, trust Jack O'Connor. For the last 50 or so years, there's been every kind of BS round you could imagine, but the American workhorse 30-06 beats 'em all. The only thing that comes close is the .270 and .308. Everything else is marketing, macho magnum BS, and krap some blowhard like Elmer Kelton was pushing. That is all, I have spoken. I also think that the .30-30 comes pretty close Close to what? Why do you think? he meant if you were close enough

well, the 06 has gotten five pages of random discussion out of this thread... must be doing something right. I personally dont have a use for one as I just bought a 300 win mag...

I also feel that you need to take into consideration what you will want to use the rifle for. Like others said the 30-06 can be used for any native game in North America, as well as many of the exotics found here, and granted there may be some cartridges that will do a better job but I personally dont have the ability to have a different rifle for each animal I may want to hunt at this point in my life. Which is why it was the first rifle I bought. On another note there are also recoil reduction ammo avialable which will make it easier to shoot. And like someone else said the weight of the rifle plays a decent part in the forces that are put into your shoulder.

Hey, I was j/k....but seriously your answer was what I was looking for. For all of y'all who are comparing the "aught to six" to 7mm and 300 mag, isn't the 30-06 older than these? I mean, the technology improves drastically in a few years. In 1 decade. So, my original post was to say that 30-06 is the best for it's time. Now its little sister/brother the 25-06 has better trajectory. Other calibers, like .284, as mentioned before, have also surpassed it. But 30-06, as someone said, got 5 pages of discussion, so must be doing something right. I think that the .30-06 Springfield is the oldest cartridge that is still hanging on with the new trajectoryafied rifles other than the 7mm(7x57). I don't care what any of the gun experts say 6.5 Swede, 8x57 etc. c***. I mean the calibers that any average hunter would know. Someone who doesn't want the wallet gone and doesn't care about 2000yd ballistics. Thank you

Folks will use it a lot because of military background (along with 223/308) and they aren't exactly the best thing since sliced bread, but they can get the job done well on a budget.

...30-30 ? 1st military or commercial caliber in smokeles powder??? Ummm I doan't think so...
Go look at the 1889 so called "Belgian" Mauser in 7.65x53 designed by MauserWerk as their 1st smokeless round and the manufacturing rights sold to the Belgian Governmeet and built by what became Fabrique Nationalle in Herstal Belgium ...I own one or at least what's left of the barreled action of a Hopkins & Allen contract gun mfg'ed in 1917 in Norwich CT USA.... or the 1894 Norwegian/Swedish Military Commission's M94 Mauser in 6.5x55 mfg'd by both both countries also designed by MauserWerk, and updated into the M96 small ring reciever that was built until the mid/late 1930's as the M38. Even the M94's shot 160 gr bullets at 2200fps and the updated "Swedish Express" aka SE's upped that to 2400fps in military grade 160's except in the 19" carbines.
MauserWerk redesigned the 1889 Mauser into the 1891 and 1893 Argentines but retained the 7.65x53 round. 99%+ of the Belgians were collected off the WW I battlefields and melted down, so complete guns are quite rare. My barreled action is unfired, and was inherited from a Dallas Fireman family member who aquired it sometime in the early 1950's in Dallas and was never rebuilt for the lack of parts. My gun's firing pin was broken when I got it couple years ago, and it interchanged with a Brownell's 1893 Argie's but nothing else will interchange and sadly I am missing all the bottom metal and magazine parts, so it still sitting as is 60 years later and another generation older.
H & A had a 3 year contract to supply the French and Belgian military for use against the Germans and their much superior 2nd Edition M98 Mausers J Super .323 diameter bullets during WW I but the war ended before many US made 1889's were ever shipped to Europe. Terrible design with a full length barrel shroud that was too costly & difficult to manufacture at war time build rates and the sights that were mounted on the shroud were inaccurate at best.
OBTW As far as the most complete hunting round still being hunted world wide...I much prefer the 9.3x62 Mauser in 250 gr thru 320gr bullets for Dangerous Game thru WTails. 9.3x62 Mauser's were designed in 1905 by Otto Bock in Berlin for use by the South African farmers as a replacement round for the super expensive British Holland & Hollands that would fit into the cheaper and commonly available M98 Mauser receiver that was/is still stronger than the 1903 or 1906 Springfields ...and kill crop foraging critters up to the size of elephant, cape buffalo, rhino and hippo's reliably...and still does it today in standard weight and sized rifles.
