How much more powerful is a 300 mag compared to a 30-06 anyway? Also, are there any animals(including exotics)in Texas that the 30-06 isn't over power for? If your looking for a new rifle I would look at 25-06, 257wby or 270. There is nothing in Texas that you can't hunt with those three. Not to mention all three have a lot less recoil. Just curious, not getting anything new...yet

If I mght add , contrary to a lot of what you may have heard I would like to toss one more little thing at you. It has wisely been said that you can never be overgunned, just like an animal can never be overdead. The entire overgunned load of bs was promoted by gun makers to sell more guns. A good rule of thumb I believe is to shoot the biggest that you can shoot well. There are of course calibers for different usages, and it can be kept within reason of course. There is no reason to go squirrel hunting with an 06,, although if a man did use it for everything, and paid attention to where his bullets were going after hitting a squirrel then he is going to be most likely quite capable with the same rifle after any other game. You would never be overgunned for deer or hogs for sure with an 06. There may be better calibers for certain situations, but overgunned? no. Just a choice you personally make as to what you want to shoot. I applaud your efforts, and your tenacity in the face of some older hunters and shooters opinions who poke fun at your inexperiance. But keep asking questions and hanging tough and soon you will have forgotten more than many of these jokers know. Probably me included. God luck and good hunting.
America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. Claire Wolfe

Chital if you buy a 30-06 society wil shun you, you will face a mediocre lifestyle and never marry
Why do this to yourself?
Buy a .270 and bask with us in the glory and limelight

I would like to chime in here..
The 30-06 is what I have hunted exclusively with no matter what I was after as long as it was bigger than a rabit. This past Christmas I finally decided that it's time to look at selecting a weapon more closely matched to the game I was hunting.
With that said, there is absolutely NOTHING that a 30-06 can do that a .300 Weatherby Mag can't do faster, harder and further, and that includes the recoil too....
Any bullet you can put into the 30-06 you can put in a .300 wby mag, and you will gain range, speed, and energy too.
If I had to choose ONLY one rifle, it would be a hard choice between 30-06 and 300 wby mag, but in the end the 300 wins out in the .30 caliber arena.

Only problem is that 300 WBY bullets are $94.99 at Gibsons in Kerrville. I don't have enough money to pay for that. I know it's a great rifle, but too expensive bullets

I have been bashed on this before, but I shoot a 22-250. Right bullet placement. My family doesn't believe in overgunning because we are meat hunters!

I guess I have been reloading way too long because last time I bought them they were around $20 a box of 20.... Even reloading for them costs me less than $50 for a hundred rounds....

Why would anybody get a 3006 when you can get a 308 in much handier packages that do the same thing.
I cant believe there are 3 pages of redundant 3006 statements.
Young hunter, I went from the 3006 to the 22250 because I hated the 3006 so much.

Not me.I am not particularly recoil sensitive but at some point recoil cannot be ignored. #1 reason guys can't shoot their rifles well..300 WBY Mag is a punisher of the highest order. Not saying it applies to you, just saying....
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.
