Am a crazy to say that .30-06 Springfield is the oldest and most versatile cartridge? I mean, I've seen 55gr bullets(factory)and 220gr bullets for this same rifle. Doesn't that mean that it could tackle just about any animal? for one, its not the oldest. Many factory cartridges loaded today, such as the 45-70, 30-30, 44-40, etc, are alot older. as far as being versatile, its jthe jack of all trades, but the master of none. Its really overkill imo for southern whitetail. recoil in a standard weight rifle, while not excessive, is not light either. there are alot better whitetail cartridges. There are also alot better Whitetail/mule deer/elk combo cartridges. its trajectory isn't as flat as the .25-06 or the .270. it dosen't have the knockdown that the .7mm mag or the .300 win does for bigger animals. if WWII had never happend, the 30-06 would not be near as popular as it was. it was a familiar cartridge with the returning GI's comming home from overseas....thats why it sold so well still a good cartridge though..... Buddy it is indeed a good cartridge. Don't let this guy get you down. some people are born dinks and some have to work at it. He works overtime. Its an interesting topic and I am glad that you brought it up. Oh and by the way the 06's main claim to fame is that it is the most gun that the average man can shoot accurately and effectively. That in itself makes it a one of a kind.

I did not say it was a bad cartridge. I did not say it was inadaquite or not versatile.

The trajectory is inferior in 7mm mag and 270 and 25-06 etc terms. But, arent 7 mag and 25-06 newer cartridges? Say hello to technology!

Kinda funny when you read about the newest loading of a just developed new caliber. It out performs the venerable 30/06 by... fill in the blanks. The 06 is the benchmark by which most all other calibers are judged. It was made famous by 2 wars. It has been used to dispatch all makes and models of animal on all continents on the planet. I'm not certian, but I'd bet money you could go someplace like Tibet or Xanadu and find a store that sold 06 ammo. Heck... you could probably find it on Mars! When I started my latest rifle build, caliber is the easy part. I don't handload and wanted the most variety. Just have a stroll down the ammo section in Cabelas and count the number of different loadings for 06. Last time I was in there they had 2 complete rows of nothing but 06. I dont think anything else comes close. Yes many cartridges outperform the 06 but check back in 100 years and see how many have survived. I'll bet on the 06 being there.

If the 30-06 had the word "Magnum" attached to it then I would probably us it. Since it doesnt then its worthless!

++++1 with Blanco. The .30-06 is truely the cartridge by which all others are judged. If you're handloading for this setup, it even becomes more versatile. If you don't, there is a plethora of over the counter stuff to work with. It might not be the most efficient cartridge with today's standards, but if I could only have one rifle and one cartridge.... It's my trusty 03-A3 in .30-06.
JCB: Is that a .223 AR you're holding next to that wild pig? Last time I checked, it doesn't come with the word "Magnum".. I might be wrong... but I don't think so. It should open up some interesting conversation.:)

If I needed 1 rifle to do it all it would be the '06. I've been hunting with one on and off since I was 14 and always come back to it.
The '06 is kinda like that girl in HS who was not real pretty but never left you disappointed.

It's still one of the benchmark calibers that everythig else is compared to. From 110 grain to 240+ grain bullets, it can do it all.

My second deer rifle was a Springfield 30-06.... once I grew up and learned that you can take a bullet that is half the diameter in a caliber that is a lot less recoil, and endup with the same end results.. I put it in the safe and have not fired it in atleast 15 years.

Too funny, a buddy and I once had a cigar & scotch discussion over the endless debate of .308 and .30-06 and it came up somewhere in there that if the .308 had been developed first (big if, I know, but the single malt was good) then the .30-06 would have been labeled as a .308 magnum, especially with almost a half century of powder development. I love my 06's, I have two and would not mind having another if I can ever find a Garand that I can't live without. -ww
A thousand reasoned opinions never equal to one case of diving in and finding out.

I bought 2 boxes of 55 grain 30.06 accelerator ammo about 2 years ago. Coyote's don't even know they are dead. It is marked at 4000+ ft per second.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

How much more powerful is a 300 mag compared to a 30-06 anyway? Also, are there any animals(including exotics)in Texas that the 30-06 isn't over power for?

I just though magnum just means more steroids Magnum means "I aint a recoil sissy". And if you shoot a magnum with managed recoil ammo then its time to turn in your man card!

If your looking for a new rifle I would look at 25-06, 257wby or 270. There is nothing in Texas that you can't hunt with those three. Not to mention all three have a lot less recoil.
