300 ammo is much cheaper, and you get a better bullet selection and heavier bullet options than the 6.8. Plus 6.8 ammo is very hard to find these days. I, as well as MANY, don't need a choice of ammo that differs by 100grs. Also, I have absolutely no problem finding 68 ammo any day of the week. I don't understand where that is coming from. I can buy 6 or more different brands/weights/types of 68 ammo right this second. Here's 14 different choices from only ONE manuf.! http://www.ssarmory.com/6.8ammunitionsales.aspx Hard to find 68 is a thing of the past!!!!!!!

Yes. If you have a complete AR-15 in 223 already, you could just install a new barrel. Or, just buy a fully built upper and use your existing lower. This way you can put on a dedicated scope for each caliber without having to re-sight in. as long as you put it back on the same spot as before on your upper rail it should hold zero right? Theortically, yes. But by the time you switch just the barrel, and remount the scope, you normally get a shift in POI from different bullets and calibers. I want a different scope anyway from my 223 and 300 black out, so I need seperate uppers with each having their own scope. Larue mounts? My next purchase.

I still get calls all the time from people looking for 6.8 ammo. They say they can not find any and their normal sources are all out. I don't shoot 6.8 or know actual factory lead times. But getting brass to load for is also hard. Just my .02 on what I've seen.

I always look at how much 223 ammo I can buy for what a new build will cost whether 6.8, 300 blackout, etc. But then again my Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel is a nice shooter. Next on my list is an Alexander Arms 17hmr. Heard great things from owners about that little gun.
I go to Bone Daddy's for the burgers....yeah, that's why.

I'd pick the 6.5 Grendel over 6.8 any day. You can use regular ar-15 magazines, ballistics are much better, ammo is much cheaper (golden wolf at $13 a box).
6.8 is difficult to find, magazines are difficult to find and expensive as hell ($50-$60 last time I checked?), and you just won't find the ammo as cheap or as available as the grendel. 300 blackout is great if you're not into long range or want to shoot suppressed.

http://www.ar15performance.com/6_8_misc_infoLots of Info at the above link.. There is no doubt in my mind the 5.56 makes the most sense for a training, 3 gun, varmint or a HD round, they feed with no issues, everyone makes mags and every part is cheap. There is just no need to look for any other caliber when considering the uses above. The 6.8 has a dual use as well, it can be a very effective legal hunting cartridge and a HD round also. The terminal performance on game is much better than most other cartridges, making it the best choice for deer and hogs. Several Goverenment agencies have moved to the 6.8 because it offers 80% of the power of a 308 on a much lighter platform. It is the second most popular AR15 cartridge in terms of sales and suppliers.

You 68 haters now need to find a different excuse for why the 68 sucks so bad!!!! Don't get butt hurt I said it.
