What is the best (most desirable) AK-47 and what do you look for in a puchase?

Desirable how? Collectable? Accurate?(lol) Handling? Expensive? Cheap?
I prefer a foldable one myself. They are all bullet hoses. Ive gone to underfolders and Duracoat and as much ammo as I can afford.
Magazines are plentiful and very robust. More accessories available all the time.
I guess "desireability" is relative. I'm certainly not interested in $1000 AK's me. It is just another tool in my box; correct tool for the job at hand.

I've got a Maadi, dont know if bad or good but it shoots pretty good though. Had it for about 10 years.
Bartender, bring me anything except brake fluid, cause I don't plan on stopping!

I've got a Romanian WASR as my hog gun. it is much more accurate than I had been led to believe and is a lot of fun to shoot.

I like Saigas. They are factory russian AK (barrels, receivers, etc, not bastage kit guns like most others AK's here), and after converted they are top notch. You can pay more for Arsenal to do the same thing, but the finish on them is nothing special. I have two Arsenals and they aren't worth what I paid for them in my opinion.

I'd say that Krebs are the clear cut winners in the post ban types and Valmets in the preban.

I have owned multiples of most of these: Preban Norinco 56S-1, 56S-2, 56S-3 Preban Norinco 84S (.223) Postban Mak90s and NHM91s Preban Polytech AKS Spikers in .223 and 7.62x39 Preban Polytech with side folding bakelite furniture Maadi ARM (Pars & kits) Yugo M70 (folder and fixed) Hungarian SA85 Romanian SAR1, SAR2, and SAR3 Hungarian AMD65 Romanian WASR10 Global Trades Romy G Lancaster Arms Russian Red 3060
(and who knows what I'm not remembering)
Never owned an Arsenal, never will. I will not pay the same (or more) for what is essentially a kit gun when I could get a legitimate preban AK. Wouldn't even consider it.
The best AK's (IMO) are Chinese. They have the best trigger bar none. If you get a preban there is no concern or worry about parts count and everyone and anyone wants it when it comes time to sell. THe absolute best of the best is a milled Polytech Legend. It don't get no better.

Just curious, what are the milled Polytech legends worth? My FIL has two unfired still new in the box, complete with slings, cleaning kits, and I think bayonets as well. I believe he bought them in 1984. They are fixed stocks with really dark wood.
Not an AK guy, but I damn sure appreciate them for what they are.

Ain't that the truth. Notice there wasn't one on my "once owned" list. Never could bring myself to buy one but have handled and lusted after them. RWH those are just the AK's...I wish I had the money to keep everything I've ever owned..just showing that pile to Schumer and Pelosi would give them an instant coronary. The 1.6 mm stamped receivers available now that are used by the better makers are every bit as "good" as any milled receivers. In fact milled receivers in preban weapons were made on old pre WW2 machinery by arsenals without the tech skills to make good stamped ones. Milled often doesn't mean better and the IDF never did get things right with the Galil using a milled receiver.

On what the milled or 1.6 stamped? I agree on the quality issues re:the milled receivers.

I personally would never pay over 750ish for an AK, thats what I paid for my Arsenals and I feel like I overpaid.
A Tiger or something I would pay alot more, but not for a run of the mill AK.
