In 1960-61, my father killed a very large dog like animal. A local biologist suggested he send the head to the TPWD and let them examine it in order to determine if it was a yote or a wolf or a cross. The report came back stating that it was a yote and that there were no wolves in East Texas and had not been in 50+ years. BTW the yote was killed on Red River Arsenal (now Red River Army Depot)property just west of Texarkana.

These threads always make me wonder...Why do so many people care so much about whether or not someone is wrong about what they think they saw? There is no way that anyone can prove without a doubt that there aren't wolves in Texas, or chupas, or squatches. Did they almost certainly see something else, sure, but they think they saw something, and you can't prove otherwise. Why waste your time cutting someone down when for all you know they are right and they really did see something special, even though they probably didn't.

Probably the first thing to realize is that the questioning of an extraodinaryclaim isn't cutting somebody down. Second, there is good reason to question and to doubt such claims. Extaordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Sure enough, proving negatives is tough, but proving positives should not be so tough, yet the wolves, chupacabras, black panthers, and bigfoots seem amazingly without proof despite rampant claims. The discrepancy is huge.

Have I ever seen a wolf in Texas....no. However, my great grandad who passed a little over 10 years ago was the Hunt County trapper for around 30 years during the 50's, 60's, and 70's. I have an article somewhere where he had trapped a few.

I remember my dad and I hunting in Gorman back in the mid 70's and saw a pack of 7 wolves hot on the trail of a doe that had passed about 5 minutes earlier. I do know the difference and these were wolves. Some were gray and some were black, I wanted to shoot one but my dad was not having it. I have never seen another since. I don't know if was a rare case to see any back then or not, but we did see them that day.

I used to live in Liberty, Texas and a game warden I knew told me the last verified true Texas Red Wolf was seen in a secluded Trinity River bottom area about fifteen miles east of Liberty in the very early eighties. For at least twenty years now, they are believed to be extinct. He said it is believed to be some cross breeds with coyotes scattered around Texas but no full blood wolves left.

Yep, a lot of the remaining red wolves from Texas and Louisiana were trapped in the 70s or 80s and moved to NC and set up in a refuge. No doubt they didn't get them all, but it isn't likely a viable breeding population remained.

You haven't lived until you have seen a black panther and Sasquatch fight over a chupacabra female in heat.

We had government trappers on our lease properties in Callahan and Stephens county. The "wolves" were actually half bred Alaskan wolves raised as pets and then released when they turned back to their native aggressive genetics. They bred with coyotes resulting in a larger canine, that was much more aggressive than your typical coyote. Technically not wolves. And not nearly the size of a gray or a red.
