Despite my best efforts, I've never been able to convince some of the locals there are no wolves in East Texas. Granted, there are plenty of coyotes, including some larger ones, that someone who has never seen a wolf, might mistake as one. But the fact is, a full-grown wolf can easily tip the scales at three times (150 pounds) that of a full-grown coyote.
I recently happened across a rare photo in the current issue of Deer and Deer Hunting magazine that shows a grey wolf staring down a coyote. And perhaps the best way to describe it, is that the coyote appears much like a red fox standing near a German Shepard.

I thought wolves were the people that call you wanting you to pay for a service you never received.

Front legs appear way too long for a hog.

And reportedly, Timber Wolves are no smaller, weighing as much as 175 lbs. It's also reported that timber wolves and grey wolves are one on the same. Whatever the case, this makes it about as heavy as any mature buck you'll find anywhere in Texas. http://www.bearcountryusa.com/animals/animal_info.php?id=17Clearly, your first sight of a full-grown wolf would leave no doubt that it's not a coyote.

In about 1961-62 when I lived in Alto, Tx...which if my mind still works is in East Texas..I hunted almost nightly with my Coon Hounds...I saw one very large wolf over above Weches Tx in front of an old country store with a large Gulf Oil sign outside about 2 AM, and I caught a couple of red wolf pups later that summer on Hwy 69 about 3miles So. of Rusk...I never could get them gentle enough to handle even though they weren't weaned when I got them so I released them in the Angelina River Bottom off Hwy 21...Most Bio. and folks with opinions do not spend nearly enough time in the woods or practice their fieldcraft...If you think that computers, ect will solve this and track wildlife that's rare enough that you only see one maybe once every 2 or 3 yrs. if you hunt almost daily ....you are welcome to your opinion. I've hunted with all of the above and rarely found one that could walk in the woods with good trapper...Dirt

The 'wolf' population in east TX west LA is actually the Red Wolf. They are still present - however, the Red Wolf sould not be considered even remotely similar to the larger Gray Wolf (which, in past historical times, could be found in east TX) - it (the Red Wolf) is similar to a coyote. And, according to a recent genetic study, it is closer to the coyote genetic strain than true wolf and is a hybrid (about 75% yote).
Only at the end do you realize the power of the Dark Side.

Another distinctive difference is that Wolves have a rounded ear tip, whereas coyotes are a pointed ear tip.
According to wildlife biologist at TPWD, SFAU, and TAMU, the red wolf is the only wolf that may still be in east Texas, but are very few in number.

The red as been cross bredding with yotes for so long the genetics of them still being there is possible but to see a true red wolf is almost impossible...and also havnt been recorded in texas for a very long time

I remember growing up in the late 60s early 70s seeing a timberwolf behind the house. At first we thought it was a deer. Then Dad told us what it was. There is a couple near by that have pictures of what appears to be a pair of timberwolves (huge animals). The picture was taken behind their house at their pond. It was taken within the last 10 years. I wouldn't say there are "none in East Texas" just that they are a rare sight.
It's the time spent in God's creation with family and friends making memories that counts.

My great grandmother who is 90 years old was just telling me about back in the day she remembers wolves being a common thing here in TX. Crazy how times change, makes you wonder what it will be like in another 100 years.

there were some wolves in east texas, thanks to some douche nozzle that thought raising the would be cool. Just south of frankston in anderson county, there was some guy raising and selling wolves as pets, roughly 15 years ago. He was actually next door to a lease I was on. My landowner said that TPW had found out about it, and was coming down on him, and he released the ones he had. It probably wasn't a large enough population to start anything, but they were out there.
