Sasquatch has just about purged this part of East Texas of all varmints!

I have many, many pictures of very large coyotes near our home that are easily mistaken for a wolf. Compared to the mangy, small coyotes you see all over the place, our coyotes look like they hit the all-you-can-eat buffet every night.

We live a mile from the Neches River, adjacent to the largest state forest in Texas. It is very wooded, very secluded, and a perfect hunting ground for varmints.

They may or may not put a dent in the bumper when you hit one on hwy 7

I googled this looking for an answer. Yesterday while sitting in a deer blind in Blossom Tx I heard my friend hunting with me fire a shot. Something came hard and fast thru the woods I threw my gun up hoping for a big buck being flushed out and instead got a huge canine of some kind. Much larger than the biggest coyote I have ever seen. He was long legged and long bodied with a big front end and a heavier head. He went down a draw and came out amongst my inlaws horses in the neighboring pasture.not knowing what it was and being new to Texas I hesitated to even attempt a shot not knowing the laws regarding suspect carnivores and having seen the game warden that morning. On the way back to the truck my friend told me that thing was chasing a young healthy 8 pt. buck by itself. He said he was a little shaken the thing was dang near as big as the deer. He'd never seen anything like it either. I grew up in Missouri and have hunted coyotes growing up both for fun and recreation and the closest thing to it I have seen is a German Shepherd cross we had to clean oust when they were killing newborn calves. Those hybrids still weren't as long legged and bodied as this guy.

This is a similar argument to the Colorado/Grizzly bear debate. The state of Colorado lists them as endangered, but does not actually recognize any population of grizzlies. And there have been numerous sightings since the last one was killed in 1979. IIRC, it was determined that the sow killed in 1979 had been pregnant twice before.

Idk bout now but my father hunted in clarcksville texas back in the 80's and he said he encountered timber wolves a couple of times

Going on memory, the state of Texas says that the last proven sighting of a wolf in this state was 1974 in East Texas, and it was a Red Wolf. Like someone else said, it's thought that the red wolf and the coyote have interbred until the true red wolf no longer exists in Texas.

I did kill a coyote last year that weighed an even 50 pounds. Must've had some wolf blood, because I had never ever seen a coyote that size before. Normally I don't weigh them, but this one was a whopper, so I took him to the 'lie detector', which is what I call my good scale. Neighbors bring their 200 pound hogs over, and they usually weigh out at 150 or so, hence the name "lie detector".

there absolutely have been wolves in east texas.

about 15 years ago there was a man raising wolves just south of frankston off the brushy creek area. He was the neighbor to a lease I hunted on. At some point, he had about 15-20 wolves and they escaped during a storm. Through the years a few were shot, one of which by a guy that I worked with in tyler. The story was confirmed by two different people (guy I worked with and the landowner I leased from) that had absolutely no relation to each other.

wild wolves? no idea. Wolves in general, absolutely.

Closest I've seen is a 70lb coyote in a pic from several years back taken from Knox county I believe. Also saw one last weekend the size of a German Shepherd amongst cattle or I would have up close pics.
