Why not fix the weight and let the string slide through the deke? That way the loop you need is on the surface under the deke and not the bottom with the weight.

Oh it will be a while before the pics. I have been doing a dozen or two each night. I might be able to finish by
Sunday.

I think I will leave my diver deeks with the PVC. I have the cords on them that are 8 foot long for deep water. They go in slotted bags because they cost too much money to be bouncing around.


You know what is depressing. I was off Tuesday for a goose hunt. I got home, piddled then went to bed. The next morning when the alarm clock went off I was cussing myself for forgetting to turn off the alarm on a Sunday. So I was up and watched some news on the tele just laying there in bed. All kinds of fun things were going through my head, like restringing decoys all day. Things like organizing all my hunting stuff and nothing else were bouncing around. The stupid newscaster mentioned something about Wednesday and reality all cae flooding back in. Oh! how depressing can that be?

Your way is the way I do it. I am not a fan of the loop at the say bottom of the line. I like to lift the decoy head and the loop being right there to grab with my left hand. I just stack the loops onto my finger on my left hand. Way too easy especially compared to the old wind up string.

All you guys that use the 400# mono, do you buy it pre-straightened, in the coil and straighten it yourself, or does it not really need it?

I need to restring this year too. Using up the PVC cord I had was an epic disaster.

buy it coiled and hang your dekes all summer long. come hunting season, the mono will be straight.

Dave I am right there with you on the PVC, disaster. You can buy the 400 mono pre straightened from SNL something or other online. It comes in 48 inch lengths. You can buy the whole kit with crimps and a crimp tool for like 65 bucks.


If you have an Ace hardware close to you go check out there .095 and .105 clear weedeater string. I like it better than the 400 mono. and I like the fact I can walk in anytime as there is an Ace twix work and home. If I need it then it is right there. I am just a big online orderer. I like to see products and give money to a person. That way I can return it without losing money in shipping it back. Plus I got a brief window here to get my stuff organized as the yearly bullcrap is about to begin.

Oh and go by Academy they have the crimps for .88 a pack of 24. So that would be .88 per dozen decoys. I bought the whole rack of crimps at the Acaddemy in Rosenberg.

I dont like the Mono. I just texas rig with braided decoy line.

I like your idea of using the braided line and would not be a problem for your area. 1 or 2 dozen deeks and it is easy. Throw 10 dozen at the bay 3 times a week and it gets old. IMHO the braided would take too long in my application. Up north with just a couple doz it would be acceptable.

I have come to the point of when I hunt at the bay to just drop them in the front of the boat between hunts. I pull the boat along as the hunters and I are grabbing decoys. I have to constantly tell them don't wind them up, just drop them in a big pile in the front of the boat. It is easier later to just start grabbing decoys and chunking them when we get there. I can drive in circles in the shallows while the hunters are grabbing and throwing.

I dont Wrap the lines. Its a Texas Rig with Braided line. I carry, pickup and throw out same as a Texas Rig.

Hang your decoys by the clip with the 400lb mono, and it's straightens out just fine.

PVC has worked fine for me for years. That with a free sliding egg weight and crimps to make loops at both ends, that way whatever end you pick up has a loop. X2 on hanging it up after rigging it and the line wont be coiled anymore. Mine got uncoiled overnight.

how do you carry them with no loop to pull them with? I use a large clip and clip each loop as I walk around gathering them. I can see if you have 6 deke's or something but what about when you have a couple dozen out? I can make one big pass and pick them all up at the same time.

I Cant do that. I grab 9 and tie an overhand knot with all 9 lines. Drop that bundle and grab 9 more.

I have some both ways. The weights tend to slide down the line better than the line through the deek. Both ways work though.

Also by using swivels I can switch up deeks/cords as I go and not have to have them all rigged a certain way/depth.

I bought a big spool of it from SNL. It pretty much straightens itself.

I re-rigged mine with 400" mono and 5 oz egg sinkers from bottomdwellers.com. Mine are attached to the decoys by a swivel and the weight slides. Only problem I have is the 400# mono does not allow the weights to slide as freely as I would like. In shallow water no problem but in 3ft or so I ussually have 1-2 decoys that float off. I am considering glueing the weights and allowing the decoys to slip on the mono with a swivel.

Have any of you done this and if so what adhesive did you use.

I am much more into simple. I run the line through the keel, crimp a weight to one end and crimp a loop in the other. Never had trouble with the weight pulling the line through the hole in the keel.

When I pick up the decoys I grab the head with my right hand and lift the decoy. When I lift the decoy the loop is right there next to the keel. I can put a dozen loops per finger and tow the hole bunch floating behind me. With each dozen I put a d-ring clip.

I strung up 2 more dozen last night. The more I work with that particular brand of weedeater string the better I like it. I have used the gray Husqvarna in the past and was sorely disappointed.

I only have 4 more dozen at home and 2 or 3 dozen at a friends house and I will be done.

Looks like a short line, bet it works great. You could also throw 3 bundles in a decoy bag for walkins.. You could do the same thing with mono. What is a braided line?

Post me some pics of said weadeater line too, I wanna go buy some, I think there's an ACE really close to my house.

It is the olive drab braided 1/8" decoy line that Knutsons sells. It is GOOD stuff. Lasts two lifetimes.
