Wow. All this debating about poaching, what will kill, what won't, what's legal, what's not.... And I don't see where anyone has brought up the fact that not being able to use a suppressor is just another infringement on our liberties. I realize suppressor ownership is perfectly legal (I have more than one), but what I'm getting at here is why are we perfectly alright with "accepting" more regulation, but we fight when there is a chance to "roll back" and reduce unnecessarily regulation????
Guys, this should be a no-brainer if you are pro-liberty and pro-freedom. Why allow this minor infringement? Speak up and speak out. Criminals, poachers, etc. have always done what they wanted. Well said my friend.

It is still going to be illegal to hunt deer with a .22. That being the case, a supressor used on a center fire rifle will only quiet down the muzzle blast. Most of the sound you hear from a center fire rifle is the bullet breaking the sound barrier. If you think a supressor will help someone kill more deer or get away with poaching, then you are basing your argument on fiction and ignorance. Suppressors do not make rifles silent, so to say that a deer will not hear you shooting at it is completely rediculous and ignorant of fact. Each day of my life I find myself wondering what scientists used as a comparative bench mark when they declared the the human race to be an intelligent species. LOL Sometimes while you are busy calling people idiots, you make an idiot of yourself. You were right about the sound barrier but your DUMB to the fact that subsonic ammo exists. Anyway carry on being ignorant. Supressors are not neeew just for deer.

I am for it. For me personally I want to take my 300 Whisper with silencer with me when I deer hunt in case a group of hogs come in. It is more fun that way. I would not shoot a deer or game animal with a subsonic bullet, but would use a sonic load. The point was made about hearing pro and it is valid. I use my AAC 7.69 SD with my AR-15 all the time because of that. I do not have to wear ear pro.
As was stated, it does not silence the weapon, only cuts down the noise on your end. You still hear the sonic crack of the round going down range. There is no disadvantage to the animal and it still allows for a clean humaine kill. This would eliminate any issues with game wardens questioning you during deer season when you are hog hunting. I like the idea and if you are willing to spend the money in my opinion it is worth it.
MY VOTE IS YES!!!

The Suppressor Fad has hit Bandera Gun Club long ago..Most of the guys rifles I've shot do not change the POI enough to matter within a 200 yd shot...but they are also not silent...One of the local sausage co's uses one to harvest Axis off the local ranches and it seems to do well.... lET'S FACE IT BOYS WILL HAVE THEIR TOYS...I CANNOT SEE THE NEED AS MOST OF THE HOGS AROUND HERE WILL RUN IF A BUD HITS THE GROUND NOISE OR NOT...DD

You know, reading a little bit of this thread and scanning over the rest of it, I can't believe some of the posts and bad mouthing going on. Why would anyone be against this issue? You are on a hunting forum, so you must be "for" hunting. Why would it matter if you had a suppressor or not? A suppressor has many benefits for it's use, and they don't even come close to outweighing the negatives.
But, back to the topic at hand. Where can we get up-to-date info on what has been discussed with the TPWD? I did some searches and reading, but couldn't find any current data.

Nothing new as it is currently just a proposal. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/fee...x.phtml#item_02The proposed amendment to §65.11, concerning Lawful Means, would allow the use of firearm silencers to hunt alligators, game animals and game birds. Under current rule, the use of sound-suppressing devices to hunt alligators, game animals or game birds is unlawful. The department has determined that there is no resource- or enforcement-related reason to prohibit the use of firearm silencers for the take of alligators, game animals or game birds, and therefore proposes to eliminate the current prohibition. The department notes that if the proposed is adopted, it will not relieve any person of the obligation to otherwise comply with any applicable state, federal, or local law governing the possession or use of firearm silencers. The proposed amendment also alters §65.11(3) to include additional counties to the applicability of the provisions governing the use of crossbows. This change is necessary to ensure consistency with the changes to §65.42 discussed elsewhere in this preamble. (1) Firearms.
(A) It is lawful to hunt alligators, game animals, and game birds with any legal firearm, including muzzleloading firearms, and including a firearm equipped with a silencer[weapons], except as specifically restricted in this section.

The sidebar shows Item 2 has been withdrawn. The link still directs to it though. I wonder why they withdrew it?
Item 2 is the proposed agenda change that, in addition to other changes, makes suppressor use on game animals legal.

Per phone call with TPWD. This is just a proposal for the law change. They will open this to public comments very soon and they will be open until late march when the commission meets to do the actual change to the law should it be decided to do so. There will also be an open mic comment session before the change.

As another member has stated the pros outweigh the negatives by far. I hunt year round for hogs and varmints and knowing that I could take the rifles im most comfortable shooting(my soon-to-be suppressed .308 and .223) makes a huge difference. I might shoot my 25-06 30-40xs a year whereas I shoot the 308 and 223 thousands of times. If the argument that those who poach are inherently bad than they probably already have a criminal record and wouldnt be approved by the BATFE to begin withwold make that argument invalid. I hunt in relatively close proximity to homes and other hunters but have my feeders placed as to avoid these things and a few ive heard about adjacent property owners "shooting" on opening day may squash that problem as well. I love to target shoot at my lease because I have long range capabilities and as someone who thinks about others it would probably make my surrounding property owners happy at 8AM on Tuesday morning just some food for thought
