Anybody own a Boykin? I was thinking of getting a medium size hunting/family dog and my vet in Dallas,Tx recommended the breed. I live in a house with 100x150 ft backyard and mainly dove hunt. Thanks for replies...

My wife and I own a Boykin (or mey be the other way around)she is a wonderful house pet and great all around dog. when I first got her she was soft under the gun but with some wing clipped pigeons and a 22 pistol she has come around. I can now shoot pigeons with a 20 ga, also did some dove hunting with her; she is an excellent retriever and has retrieved squirels I shot with a pellet gun. Just do not rush these dogs, patience is a great viture. good luck

Tucker's just over a year and a half now. Very good family dog. Needs daily runs, they have an abundance of energy. Took him on a few hunts when he was 6 mos. but this year he got a full season of dove and still working on ducks.

In the blind at 6 mos.

By the way CurlyBill where are you located? I am wanting to get all the Boykin owners togeather for our own Texas Boykin Spaniel upland hunt next year some time, since all the BSS hunts are done in South Carolina.

It's crazy that this topic got started today as I learned about the breed yesterday and have done a ton of reading in that short time. Does anyone know of a reputable breeder here in texas? I am looking for one of the smaller side, and a female preferably. I hung out with one for about 6 hours yesterday and fell in love with her.

Texas Trace Kennels in Hempstead. PM me and I can give you the numbers of who to call. The website takes a long time because Greg is not in the USA. The pups have OFA, EIC and Cerf. clearances. I looked it up today and both the sire and dam of my pup are OFA "Good". Be careful when shoping for Boykins because all of the good breeders will have a waiting list and the bad breeders will gladly take your deposit for a pup and say it has health clearances and then they wont be able to provide the proof. The are the only reputable breeder in Texas that I know of. Brandywine Kennels, Just Ducky Retrievers and Yocona River Boykins are all great breeders as well but you have to be patient because there will be a long list of people in front of you especially if you want a female and you will have to travel how ever far they are to pick up your pup. PM me if you want the numbers for Texas Trace. Check out their website.

I have a Boykin from Just Ducky Kennels. She is awesome. Great family dog, great hunting dog. A lot of fun! Pam at Just Ducky is really great -- very knowledgeable and very informative.

If you are interest in a started male, one of her prior placements needs a new home. You can check it out on Just Ducky Kennel's Facebook page. Here is what it says. Check out Facebook for the pictures.

Ruben DOB: 10/7/10 GRHRCH UH St. Thomas Chief x Justaquickerpickerupper (GRHRCH UH Just Ducky's Justforkicks x HR Just Ducky's Miss Edgefield) Such a deal! Ruben has been doing really well finding and flushing pheasants and partridge. He hunted Hungarian partridge, sharptail grouse, pheasants and ducks this past hunting season. He has been exposed to lots of wild birds daily (weather permitting ) during this off season. Ruben had his basic gun dog traning at Just Ducky kennel and is e-collar and force-fetch conditioned. Due to housing limitations he is looking for a new gun dog home $2000.00 Sean Phillips Alberta, Canada lisa.sean@shaw.ca

I'm training a boykin for a client that got him from Texas Trace also. I'm sold on the breed!! I was going to get one when I'm old lady but I don't think I can wait that long.

Hank is retrieving as well and is as watery as any labrador. Very easy to train and they take pressure extremely well.

A very COOL breed...
