They can be cheaper but I've been hunting in NM for the last 17 years. Now that my son is getting older and wanting to hunt, I had thought about finding a place to take him with me where we can have good mano y mano time. Just don't know if it's worth the hassle or not. I would rather be some place where I know I won't get someone upset because my son is with me. I will see if I can him drawn on a state hunt this year. Any lease that gets upset because someone brings their child is not a lease worth being on. They probably dance naked around the fire and worship the devil. Yes, but some view the lease as a place to "let go" a kid that cannot be controlled at home. As a teacher at Title 1 schools (94% below poverty level), I believe that every child can be controlled when given a reason to do so. I have taught kindergarten to 5th grade and when given a task, any child can be controlled. Its the parents that need to be controlled. You can teach the kids about hunting, I guarantee you.

back when I hunted a lease you had to lie about what you saw. If you said you saw something decent but didn't get a shot at it, when you left to head home on Sunday afternoon one of the other guys would head out to your stand. They would never ask, but sometimes you would hear through the grapevine that they had killed one from your stand. And those were the same guys that padlocked their stands so no one else could hunt them.

For one thing my son is not a heathen whom I let run wild around the lease, yard or where ever. A child is a direct reflection of the parents. When I was a kid and I did not mind my dad or mom, I was wearing my a$$ around my shoulder blades for several days. Being a retired police officer, I've seen some some sorry parents and I know I'm not one. My ex has custody and does not believe in hunting nor does any of her family. He is only 7 years old and if I don't get him from the dark side he may start hugging trees. Another reason I want to spend time with him, when I retired I found out I had cancer and our days are numbered. I've got my illness licked but I want my son to one day look back on our time together like a lot of us on this forum do with our families years ago. OK, it's off my chest.

I am the only member on my lease so that is a tuffy. Sometimes I will get in cursing match with myself and sometimes kick my own arse for getting in the stand late. I also have been known to throw poop against the walls of my blind to mark my territory and as an act of defiance against myself. So to sum it up: violence and poop cause the biggest problems. Let me know if any of ya'll have any openings on your lease

I knew a guy that kept a 5 gal. bucket in his stand to poop in. He'd leave the bucket of poop in there all season so nobody else would hunt his stand.
The only supplies he'd bring with him where a couple of 12 packs and two cans of beans. And that's all he'd eat/drink all weekend. Peculiar old coot.

I guess I have always been fortunate to hunt with good friends and we have not had any issues among us. The only gripes I have had was our neighbors pulling some bonehead stunts every now and again.

For those of you who hunt places with minimum age limits on the bucks, what do you do about someone who shoots young bucks and then claims, "that looks 4yrs. old to me." He has also "mistakenly" shot a 1 1/2 yr.old 5 point thinking it was a 3 1/2 yr. old 5 point that was on the management hit list.

im not on a lease and hunt my own land, but i have plenty of friends that grumble when i have spent all year feeding, taking pictures, buying all my equipment, and scouting countless miles, and they get mad when i tell them "no you cant hunt my land, in my blind, under my feeder, spinning my corn, with MY WEAPON!!!!" call me selfish, but i dont do all that for freeloaders. If they show effort or do some farm work, then by all means...

I really appreciate the hunters on my land. Same ones for 10 years, very respectful, responsible and insist on paying for breakfast when I meet em in town. Great group of men.
