Hey Lightfoot, my buddy trapped a place over by San Angelo several yrs ago and the rancher let him his wife and son all shoot a blackbuck each..One was 36in, 33in, 30in, straight up.. He had a taxidermy place in Kerrville which offered to mount them for free and did so they could go to the taxidermy shows...never got them back..My hunting Bud still has their pictures..they sure smoke the ones we have in Bandera...and I've never seen any to match..I've an old one on the wall with crumpled ear and large beat up horns..but only 18 ins or so...Good luck...DD

The world record wrap around is 34 1/2" SCI. The world record straight method is 27". 30" I dont think so...36" no way. Save the stories ....put up the pictures.

I can see 30" plus measured with the curls but in no way straight up. The bucks horns would be as long as his whole body cavity. NO WAY! I actually took a #1 ranked in ROE off our ranch a couple years back and it was almost 22" straight up. 33" with curls. If you get something over 20" you definitely have a good one IMHo.

Well my family been raising black buck since the 1930's and sold Y.O some of their first black buck great aunt even has bill of sale on her wall. Biggest I've ever heard of was 27 straight tape. It's very hard to get those! I have tons of them up to 25 inches straight tape on full protein still hard for them to get that big. Don't believe it sorry bud.

While I haven't hunted with CP, I've talked with and corresponded with him. If he says that he has 18-22" Blackbuck, I'll bet he does and those are exceptional Blackbuck. I've seen greater exaggeration for Blackbuck horn lengths than any other game I've hunted. This one ranks fairly high in SCI. IIRC, his score was just over 74. He's rather long straight, but his curls are a bit loose. In the one shot, the T/C Encore will help give an idea of his straight length. FWIW, he's north of 22" straight. He's definitely more than a foot shorter than the aforementioned 36" specimen. While I started to enter him in ROE, I looked at some other of presumably similar (or longer) length and decided against it. I use the length of the ears to get a rough idea of how long the horns measure. It takes about 4X ear length for Blackbuck to measure greater than 22" straight. I've measured quite a few Blackbuck ears to help me evaluate horn length in pictures and all have been within 1/2". So, it's a pretty good way to get an idea within an inch or two. There were some in that book presumably 26"+ that were less than 3X ear length.

He's exceptional. However, I don't think he's "well over 30 inches" as stated in the caption. Blackbuck are so small even average horns look decent on the hoof.

I think everyone is a bit confused here. SCI does NOT score this animals STRAIGHT UP...they are scored WITH THE CURLS. So, with that being said the blackbucks i have mentioned will be 18-22" straight up and will be anywhere from 27-34" with the curls respectively. Normally any blackbuck that is over 20" straight up is a dang good animal. To see what we normally take off the ranch check us out at www.portersexotics.com Also, every blackbuck that we have taken off the ranch exceeds 18" straight up. We do not take anything less than a gold medal exotic off our ranch.

Exactly, SCI goes around the curls, which essentially favors tightly twisted Blackbuck. It also gives a little bit more advantage to Blackbuck that are thick-horned.
ROE goes straight more or less. The tape goes in and out of the curves, but not around. However, despite the scoresheet instructions, it's pretty obvious to me by simply looking at pictures in Thompson's books that some Blackbuck have been measure around the twist.

Agreed Jaye.I know when I started scoring years ago for ROE I had an in depth conversation with Mr. Temple specifically about the blackbuck or basic antelope score sheet, and how it could be easily misinterpreted.

Not trying to start a pissing match with anyone hereat all just trying to shed light on the subject because some seem to be mis informed or don't understand exactly how the animals are scored. Sorry if I hurt someones pride or feelings it wasn't my intention.

That's what I thought until I saw Mark Mishnicks photo's of his sis in laws buck...One Game Rancher in Bandera who saw the photo when I had it at the Gun Club said he'd give $10K apiece or more for any that large for breeding stock..Around Bandera, I only seen max 24 in...But I'd bet the major Taxidermy Studios in Kerrville, or Ingram probably have the pictures on their website, because Todd never got the mounts back..and I don't know the story there..DD

Huntnguide, Not upset here...Just pointing out "most of us" agree with you! 30" straight or even 28" have ever been recorded anywhere. I have 2 at 23" and have exotic guided and hunted for 30 years. I will admit that I havent seen one as big as the one in JROD's post.

Don,
You should get and post the pictures if you can. Without them, there's too many twists and turns (e.g., hunting buddies, in-laws and mysteriously missing heads) in the story. The size issue alone is hard to swallow. The 36" straight blackbuck's score would likely surpass the current SCI #1 by 30%. In fact, if dad, mom, and son together harvested a 36", 33", and 30" straight measure blackbucks, they'd almost certainly have the #1, #2, and #3 in both SCI and ROE. You'd sure have to question to experience and/or business sense of a game rancher who'd trade those jewels away in appreciation for some trapping work.

I know not very good pictures, but how long do you think this guy is? Lonnie, I would say he is going to push the 18" mark straight up. Maybe even reach 19" looks to be a fairly younger BB as well. give him 2 more years and he will be a stud no doubt.

I know not very good pictures, but how long do you think this guy is? Lonnie, I'm willing to bet you have a good idea how long he is and are testing us. I have one life sized that looks just like that one. He has 4 long twists and is 23" straight up and 30" around the twists. The lower left in the picture.

I sure would like to see photos and find out where these 30-36" straight measured black bucks are so I could go hunt them. I am no expert on the scoring system for exotics but I did shoot a really nice black buck a couple of years ago and straight measurement he is just a fraction over 22" with four curls and around the curl measurement he is just over 30" I have been concentrating this past year on a big Axis buck and looking for a big Axis over 36" and they are rare let alone a black buck that big.

You boys (Robert & 007007) do seem to have a hard time reading and comprehending now don't ya? Spoken for and taken obviously have two different meanings. I simply committed to Moffitt Outfitters, and exchanged information. Nobody said anything about taken....relax boys. Once we shoot him we will post photos with true measurements!
