I have been reading up on using snares for hogs. I have never used them before and am thinking of trying it out this weekend.I know I would need 1/8' cable, but dont really know how to make them besides that much. Anyone have information on how to make a good snare, how to set them and use them? Where should I set them at? How many should I use and what size? Any information would be appreciated.

A buddy of mine set some snares out at his place in Haskell last spring. He built a few and bought a few. We set them out on the bottom string of fences where the games trails went under. This would keep you from snagging any deer. There are some detailed instructions on how to make them. You can also look up videos on youtube to get some ideas on how and where to set them.

Not really, but we only used them twice. I believe that we set out six on both occasions, with about 2 of them getting hits. Both times the animal got off. It is a trial and error kind of deal. I believe it could be a great tool when you figure it out though.

We use "Hold-A-Hog" snares, you can google them up & check out you tube. They work well if you use them like you are supposed to. We've snared a lot of pigs with them. You have to buy them though. I've never tried the traditional walk through snares so

I make my own coyote snares. I have caught 2 pigs so far trying to use coyote digs under my fence. I used 5/32" cable and it held. I sell them for $33 shipped. There are several sites to buy all the stuff and it can get a little costly. I bought enough supplies to make extras to help pay for the crimpers and cable cutters.
If you shoot a young deer because a neighbor will shoot it, you are that neighbor.

Snares are cheap go buy them...as far as setting they dnt have to be strong snares you just gota catch them right...you need to set the snare just big enough to catch the hog by the snout...then they will be sittin there waiting on you....if you make it to big and they get it around their neck or sholder...i dnt care if hes only 100lbs..your gona have some serious patch work to do on your fence...if its still there...

I have been snaring for a few months now. I bought a down snares form Boarmasters. I suggest buying 1 or 2 and seeing the construction or youtube it, you can see videos on how to make it there.
With that said We have snared 2 in the last few months.a 256 lb'er and the snare held even after he charged with it twice (P.S. if you are going to approach one snared, I use a 4x4 piece of plywood just in case) and a 101 lb'er that broke the snare on the 2nd charge. He ran right between two of us like a field goal. No cutters, but the other one did.
Pics are on Facebook at southern bred hog hunters.
Its really fun and yes always set where they go under a fence to keep from snaring deer OR if you want to foot snare, make sure a DEER STOP is added to it.
We have had zero luck with foot snares, all have been caught with head sanre set ups.
We have even had several little hogs go right through a head snare lol.

and navasota bred is correct, head snare will damage a fence, you can see the damage on our FB page. bent a t-post over slightly and it was anchored at the bottom. undid the bottom strand of barbed wired off of 5 t-posts.
and yes they will be pissed.

Do not put a snare on a t- post or the fence. Put it on the pipe, or something really solid, or put it on a heavy drag, like a big stump or post or something. If its to a big log, attach to the center so when the pig runs, it'll snag between 2 trees

Attach to a grapple. Then follow the trail and claim your prize!

I order them from boarmasters, got 1 dozen shipped to my door for $50 including freight and a deer stop in case you set up as foot snares.

All our fences are Tpost(at least where the hogs cross) so we have no wood post or trees to attach the snares. We attach them to the tpost and repair the barb wire knocked loose each time.
PIA but its the option we have.
Yes hog snaring is sporadic and a learning experience as you go.
Try different things and differents areas. Total rush when you get one! Will definitely be worth it when you catch one.
We run 12 a night when we run them and we consider one in there a good night!
