Corn, alfalfa, and lots of water year round. Protein from January till September.

I wouldn't feed corn year around.
Every where we've fed corn year around we've seen a big increase in the population of pigs and varmints.
IMO, If you're gonna feed anything year around feeder pens and other varmint deterrents are a must have.

We feed protein starting the end of regular season the last fill is mid to late Sept. They usually aren't empty until late Oct or early Nov.
We start throwing corn mid Oct try our best for them to be empty in mid Jan.

Feed corn from August and let it run out sometime in late January.

Here is what has my curiosity up. I hunt in Iowa at least every other year. I used to farm up there as well Corn and soybean. The deer up there have, as most of you already know nice antlers.

They eat a diet of Corn and Soybean year round, along with native legumes, and are huge. Even after harvest there are plenty of seeds left in the field to include whole ears the combine missed because the stalk broke. I know Soybean has about twice as much Protein as Corn. I think I remember Corn is about 7% protein per kernel. I know the corn up there is a higher quality as compared to what I buy down here, kernels are nearly twice the size as Academy brand. Does that make a big differece? Does quality of the corn matter?

Side note, we have better luck hunting near the cut Soybean feilds in December. The deer will come out and scatch the snow forever to find a soybean.

If you are on a low fence place, don't feed year around.

IF YOU DO, the following will happen.

Up until before deer season begins, you will see some NICE BUCKS on your cameras hitting your feeders. However As soon as your neighbors put up feeders and start throwing corn, these bucks leave. They go to the new food source. Seen this many many many times.

So are you saying that the bucks are attracted to the newest item throwing food at them?

Maybe those feeders were set up at better access points or areas already naturally walked.

So I should make sure my feeder is the last one running for hunting season, that way the bucks come to mine?

Just saying, when Ive done this before, I would have 7-8 bucks coming to the feeder. After my neighbors started throwing, I would only see 1-2 of these bucks. The others left to get more food. Im sure some of the bucks chased the others off.

I quit feeding year round and start before bow season now. I actually see more deer during the season than I did when I was throwing year round.

I feed corn/soybean and protein year around. 6 broadcast feeders throwing 50% corn 50% soy bean and then 5 protein feeders. Also have two 3 acre food plots that have something growing year around in accordance with the seasons.

two weeks before bow season, they are natures animals, i only feed because its allowed
