I got my first Redhead today. Was the only duck I got, just two seen. It made it worth the trip. I haven't seen many ducks in the last two days. Just have to keep looking.

Congratulations on the Red Head. I have not shot one yet. It is always good to get a duck you have never had yet.,

I looked it up when I shot it and the eyes are not red and the body was a little dark so I ruled out canvasback. I think you guys may be right though because the bill doesn't look like the one on my chart, no white band. The eyes through me off. Thanks for the correction. Guess I will pay closer attention next time. Still a first for me.

YEah I tell a can from a redhead real quick by the bill color and head shape too. Redheads have that blue bill. Cans have those dark bill and the heads are very distinctive. But don't listen to me...I'm an idiot.

That's definitely a can. However, I have only shot one redhead this season as well as one can and one scaup. Not many divers this year.

I agree Fooshman....I think I shot a ringer early in the season but that's the only diver I think I've shot this year. Besides the cans and the redheads I don't mind much.

That is why I was so happy when I saw it was a diver. This is only my second season duck hunting, the guy that got me into it has been hunting for about 5 years now and has never seen a Redhead or a Can. Hopefully it won't be my last. I still need to get a wood duck though.

Sorry, but you are an idiot for not recognizing that as a canvas right away. You have all the resources in the world that your pa and grandpa never had to id ducks and your asking a ridiculous question like that. So I guess we missed your posts when you were shooting woodies and hollywoods during the early teal season-hey dude, get a clue and go to id skool or do us all a favor and dont pull the trigger if in doubt. Jeez...

We've been buzzed by a handful here and there but not near the numbers that we saw and shot lastyear. We got buzzed by one over our left shoulder out of nowhere Sunday while waiting on some Gaddies to commit. But the weekend before last I saw a flock of redheads fly over the pond across the way. I managed to get them to come our way and they ended up just about hitting us in the head lol I scratched one of out the flock. I think I got caught up in the monment - Nothing like ~20 divers just about taking your head off.

Did see 5 or 6 gorgeous ringneck drakes on some ponds down the road while out driving around Monday after hunting. I managed two beautiful gwt drakes and fired alot of shots at some bullet proof gaddies.

I'll stop babbling now.

Well, he sure ain't beating around the bush. But there is a difference between a RH and a can. And that can mean a ticket for the hunters choice, right? Gotta' know those birds.

pigpen,
If you'll read the post I didn't ask the question. I also noticed you didn't blast the person on the thread that did ask the question. I will admit I did not ID this duck correctly. I based it on the fact that it had gold eyes not red. Should have paid more attention to the bill. I have made every effort to make sure that I hunt responsibly. I'm sorry I'm not an Ornithologist but it is people who make post like you that keep people like me from posting.

Mossyjoke you are right If I would have shot another one and thought I had two redheads I would have gotten a ticket and it would have been a lesson learned. That is one of the reason I like this forum becuase some of the people are interested in getting others into hunting and assisting them rather than chastising people that didn't grow up doing it.
