Ok I already know what kind of response this thread is going to get, but I don't care. Feel free to blast away with black panther and chupa remarks lol.

Anyway, I just saw a mountain lion for the second time in my life. Was out doing the evening hunt with my father at the 550 acre ranch we hunt in Burnet County. Hunt was uneventful and we packed it in a hair early to head home. Driving down the road towards the front of the property when I kid you not a young mountain ran from right to left across the road and into the woods about 30 yards in front of us.

Now I know most are going to say it was a bobcat, but I promise you it wasn't. I had a 100 percent clear view of it for atleast 6-7 seconds.

My guess is a few things on why it was there. We just had cattle put on the ranch two months ago, (I found the remains of a calf, figured coyotes got it. Maybe not.) And about a month ago we had a pack of javelinas make our ranch their home. Have not noticed a change in the deer herd or their activities.

I imagine it was just passing through or something, and I doubt I will ever see it again. I just wish I could of had a shot at it because I would be posting pics. I can hear BMD's popcorn popping now.....

A lot of the sightings are m ost likely young cats trying to find a new nhome range. Young toms have to range pretty far to escape an old toms territory. Cougars are ranging further into Txas from Mxico and New Mexico for afew years now.I'm in Kerr county and hunt in Kimble county, where sightings have become not uncommon. Hoping to get to take one soon. texas

always room for another buddy!

Hmmm??? I dunno. You sure it wasn't an over stuffed house cat? Maybe a scrawny 'yote? Perhaps the light of venus refracted off a pocket of swamp gas, causing reflection on the windshield that temporarily blinded you. Are you feeling ok? Maybe you should lay down.

Just kidding. I wouldn't doubt it at all. Getting into some goat country in that area.

Unless the calf remains had sticks and other brush covering it coyotes probally did it.

BTW like stated earlier cats roam a lot some have up to a 100 mile roaming radius.

I believe you. Verified sightings by TPWD outside of Kingsland, not too far from Burnet.

As stated, probably males passing through.

I don't have a hard time believing a mountain lion ran across the road in front of you.

I would not believe you if you said a black panther ran across the road.

I am, however, having a hard time believing a young mountain ran in front of you. What do you mean about young mountian? 500,000 to 1,000,000 years???

Cougars are not rare in the Hill Country nor Central TX. Had several confirmed cougar kills and sightings in Williamson County over the past few years. Those cats are here but they are so elusive that most people never realize it.

cool deal.

what part of the county? I am from burnet and the family has been in the county since the 1800's. Big cats run the south and west part of the county for sure. Hell there are free range aoudad between burnet and buchanan dam, along with plenty of big cats.

havent seen any javi's, but if you have thats a good deal. hell san saba has a season on them. wouldnt take much to get several into Burnet, especially with the river down.

I've had a javi on camera in Eastland county. A few folks claim to have seen em in the area. GW said he's heard of reports.

I live in Bandera County no. of Medina Lake and until about 8 yrs
ago had and hunted Bluetick and Treeing Walker Hounds...I know
of at least 5 lions around the lake, one over towards Quihi in
Medina, saw her with 2 cubs in daylight...and one black cat down
by Helotes...color not indigent to the area...Some folks turn loose their pets...We are in a sheep and goat area, so these sheepherders don't like dog folks, except when they loose their
sheep, cats carry them off and bury what they don't eat usually.
I also saw a Jaqurindi near Quihi...also not supposed to be here.
So did our previous Game Warden Ernie...If you have large cats..
watch what happens to your deer population...Don

Before I tell my tale ,just a little history,I grew up in the far northern reaches of Idaho 15 miles below the Canadian border in the 60's,Before I was 4 ,Dad gave me the lecture ,be aware of your surroundings, then he gave me a 22 rifle at age six and told me never point at what your not going to kill,So I hunted Elk,Deer,Grouse,Fools Hens,Bear,I was a tiny little human wandering through the wilderness, stalked by coyotes, big bears,Mama mooses were bad,Mama bears were worse,You had to know in an instant, grizzly,or black bear, coyote or wolf, elk or Cariboo
So I move to Texas, all seems calm until we buy this property, bought it in 1995(it has been part of a ranch since 1884,and we started building in 1996, every 8-10 months we would see a black cat run across the road tracking an old riverbed, last time I saw a cat was just about 11:00am broad Daylight, maybe 12 ft in front of me,in my Ford Expedition, Bright sunshine it was a Maroon, Burgundy Cat with black patterns, floral ,taller than my bumper and wider with its tail than my front end,got casts of its massive feet, had a buddy of mine call the state guys ,they said It might have been a bobcat!!I have pics of the casts, pics of Bobcats,Friggin morons and they think I can't tell a Bobcat from a jaguar.By the way I come across mountain lion tracks at least 2 times a year and see one about every three years.
