If I had tried to shoot a deer in the head, my pawpaw would have hit me upside the head. That is some straight up BS.

It's obviously a joke!
All young first time hunters, youth and adult hunters have to take a hunters safety course and all the ethics and shot scenerios are suppossed to be covered int he class.
Reading the post you can see that is sounds like it's written by a person that doesn't have a clue or slept through the class and had someone just take his money and pass him.

Still...and i can relate to what your saying...a good hunting background is the best way to go...nothing against hunters saftey but i slept through the whole thing and passed no problem...i was tought everything needed to know before hand...i had to take hunters saftey when i was 12 mainly so i could go to wyoming...but yes i know not everyone gets to be taught but if this is a true thread the the pawpaw is the most to blame IMO...still think its all a joke though

Though the youngsters should take hunter safety, I don't think they are required to take it until they are old enough to buy a full price license.

I think it's a joke. He has stated that he has done just about every no-no in the book when hunting a big mature deer, and a whole chit load of people got drawn offsides by this joker. Funnt as hell...

He was setting with his papaw. He could be 25 without hunters safety just buy a $10 deferral.

I am starting to think I shouldn't have told my story after all the junk I am getting. I didn't want to miss a deer, I tried three times to make sure I hit, it's just how the cards were dealt. Sorry if I offended any of y'all. This wasn't my first season though last year I shot a doe with my uncle's 30 30 in one shot from a long ways aways. She tasted good too! Even this year I have practiced before season on some hogs. Didn't find all of them but you can't blame me everyone knows hogs are more than twice as strong as deer. And I never knew head shots were bad, I thought that was the ideal shot but just the hardest too? I have shot a goat, close to deer sized, in the head with a .22 and it went down no problem. I thought this was a place to talk and learn hunting. Not a pETA whine fest about ethics?

Not a pETA whine fest about ethics? Even if you're not trolling, you are a troll. This has nothing to do with PETA. Even hogs deserve to be dispatched quickly and humanely, whether by knife, bow or gun. It's becoming obvious you aren't mature enough to understand the differences between hunting and killing, which segues perfectly into my next comment. Perhaps you should wrap yourself up in your binkie, and have pawpaw read you another bed time story. Do you still get boo-boo's when you fall down?

It isn't a PETA whine fest about ethics Sniper. We are hunters and first and foremost in every hunters mind should be ethics. If we are not ethical hunters then others will sieze upon that and use that to deny our hunting rights.
Every hunter owes it to the animal they hunt to take that animal as quickly and cleanly as possible (well maybe unless it is a corn steeling hog or coon but I digress)..and when one runs and it inevitably will, to do everything in their power to find it.
If you are seeking to learn, then my friend within 100 yards and the opportunity presents itself again you always go for the neck over the head - at least that is my experience. I have never head shot a deer, never wanted to - never tried and never will. It's my own decision based upon my own hunting ethics. But in 36 years every deer I have ever neck shot or seen neck shot - has dropped right there, every one. Does that mean it's going to happen in each and every case? No, there are some on here that have had neck shot deer run and live, I don't doubt them. But in my experience - its a dead deer and an ethical shot.
As for your SKS, is it scoped? A 7.62x39 round is balistically comparable to a 30-30, it isn't an inherently bad round when loaded properly - but an SKS or AK is not an inherently accurate rifle either. They were designed for battle, not hunting and as such typical 5 to 8 inch accuracy (if not scoped) is not so good for hunting. Even if scoped, the Russian soft point rounds are nothing but lead pointed, jacketed steel - it isn't like using say Remington 7.6x39 soft points (hopefully you were).
You really should look to get a quality bolt action rifle such as a Savage or lower priced Remington. It will server you better. Hell, a good old 30-30 would even be a great choice.
Ethics..every hunter owes it to himself/herself, the animal they hunt, and their fellow hunters (for game animals belong to all of us) to use good equipment, know the limitations of that equipment, be proficient with its use, know when to shoot, where to shoot, and what to do after you shoot.
I'm old enough that I did not have to take the hunters safety education course (will probably take it with my son anyways though) - if they don't teach this stuff in that class - that's sad.
Good luck on your next hunt Sniper.
Earl

Well said Earl.
Personally I don't do neck shots, never really had to.
Sniper like he said, that probably isn't the best weapon to use, but it will work, it is designed to kill human targets and cause injury. I would certainly consider getting a more common firearm as the guys have mentioned for hunting deer, it is more practical and prudent, especially when in the learning faze. I have seen some pretty maimed up deer from most all calibers to.
I cant speak for anyone else, but your story has me on the fence. I think the grief your catching is because most experienced hunters work hard with their deer and it's hard to see such a magnificent creature wasted, we get no medals for taking a deer or a high score. I don't know about the "troll" thing, but you get one point for having the "cahon'es' for posting your dilemma, just learn from it.

Thank you Earl you seem like a really knowledgeable and stand up guy. Unlike some of these jaggaloons I reread your story and it is so full of errors that you made I gave up answering all of them, and I gave it a shot. Pharagraph after paragraph, it is a perfect example of what you are not to do when it comes to harvesting a deer. It's no wonder most here think it is bogus, and are taking you to task for it. You really do need to evaluate your hunting skills or the skills of those who taught you the ropes, because they got it all wrong. That said I hope you will learn from the criticism and try to undo what you have learned as it will only get more stories like the one you posted.

Ya he was real big, but it doesnt matter, never found him. He probably made it though. I think I only hit him in the jaw or the nose. ONLY in the jaw or nose? Good lord .... And if he hopped off then he would have cleared the feeder and you should have put one in his chest to put him down instead on letting him hop off with a shot in the jaw. I hope this story is BS

Just my .02 but you Should probably leave the assault rifles to hogs and invest in a good deer rifle....270, 30-06, or something along those lines. A little more knockdown Thanks for giving the anti-gun line.

Even this year I have practiced before season on some hogs. Didn't find all of them but you can't blame me everyone knows hogs are more than twice as strong as deer. This pattern of wounding animals has to stop. Its not acceptable even though you might think it is. Hunters do wound one EVERY ONCE in a while, but you are doing regularly. I dont even know where to begin to give advice, probably get a descent scoped rifle and go to the range, make sure you can put it in a 4" circle everysingle shot at 100 yds, please stop shooting for the head too. behind the shoulder or in the shoulder on completely broadside deer or hog.
