Friend got back from Kansas and said he shot a black hen, says the guide said it was pretty rare. He left it with a taxi up there and didn't take a pic?
How rare are they?

Never heard of it, but wouldn't it still be illegal to shoot a hen, no matter what color it is?
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I've heard of a solid white one or even a metallic colored one but never a black. And yes, it IS illegal.

Hmmmmm ........ He told me the GW was good friends with his outfitter. They hunted Opening Sat. And Sun. morning. 5 of them brought back 61 birds, is that over the limit too?
Got invited, starting to be glad I didn't go.

How rare are they? It sounds like a Melanistic Mutant Pheasant to me. In large orders of pen-raised pheasants they sometimes show up. The melanistic mutant pheasant is a change in the color phase of the ringneck pheasant that is seen after 40 or 50 generations of living in a pen (pen-raised birds) and years of inbreeding. Look at a rooster mutant pheasant below: http://pacawijetechickens.weebly.com/uploads/4/0/7/7/4077052/3275827_orig.jpg?522To me they are a sign of domestication not a sign of wildness or alertness. They frequently show up on preserve hunting. With all of the predators on the loose we need truly wild wary and alert strains of pen raised pheasants. If you have to order pen raised pheasants order the wilder and predator wary alert strains like the Manchurian-cross pheasant or the afghan whitewing pheasant (also called the Bianchi pheasant).

Very well could have been a preserve. They paid 560.00 each and had a 2 story house to stay in by themselves. Thanks for the info, I've never hunted Pheasants or out of state.

If they shot 61 birds between the 5 of them then yes, it was a pen raised hunt which means that shooting the black hen is legal. I've always thought it would be tough to do a pen raised pheasant hunt where there are also wild birds. Because most likely, they're putting out hens for you to shoot and how do you know you aren't shooting a wild one, which would be illegal.

I have a better question, Why would you drive 8-10 hours to hunt pen raised Pheasants???

I have a better question, Why would you drive 8-10 hours to hunt pen raised Pheasants??? Right. Especially with all the public land available to hunt in Kansas and the cost to hunt said land.

In answer to your question as to why anyone would drive so far to hunt pen raised birds, refer to the thread about Opening Weekend in Kansas. Released birds definitely have their place..especially in years like this.
Beats staying home and watching the tube!
For those of you who haven't tried it in a while because you were turned off by birds that wouldn't fly, if you find a supplier who knows what he or she is doing, the released birds nowadays fly amazingly well. They're not wild, but they certainly aren't bad. It is different. I'll give you that. A wild bird hunt is more hunting...a released bird hunt is more shooting. The dogs don't care. Mine are good on both.
The secret to it, is to utilize a well-trained flushing dog to go ON COMMAND in front of the pointers after the point is established, and push the birds into the air. We use either Labradors or English Cockers for this duty. You'd be suprised how well it works! You owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Thanks for the pointers, Pointer!
We'll be hunting a GSP and a young lab together in Kansas this weekend. We'll give this approach a try and report back how it turned out for us.

Completely agree but my point is, you dont have to drive to Kansas to hunt pen raised birds, you can do that alot closer.

I agree with cc you can buy your own birds and hunt them on your own land here in Texas, and not drive how many ever miles away. Heck you you need a place to hunt them come to our place, just bring some extra birds.

On reserves in kansas they are not pen raised birds like we would see here there are programs with the government that allow them to shoot both sexes with no limit just like MLD properties in Texas for Whitetails most of the reserves up there have a large scale suragator program so they are not exactly pen raised. I only know this because my dad is on one with his job right now calling and rubbing it in every evening
