I've had several different calibers never loving any of em. Want just that one gun to do it all. I'm thinking it's the .308 it seems to be the best most versatile cal and very easy to get ammo. Any thoughts are appreciated

I think it is, can use it on anything in North America. Its a NATO round so surplus practice ammo is dirt cheap. These factors made me ditch my 6.8 and stick with my AR10.

Short action perfection to me is 7mm-08, second would be .308.

I went with .308 as my only bolt action rifle. I also have an ar15 that is .223, I may pick up another bolt action in .223 someday.

I lhave a Rem 700 308 L/H SPS...restocked w/my 700 BDL Syn stock. It will honestly shoot about everything I put in it..I hunt w/130 gr TSX all copper bullets, Shoot Sierra 110gr., 150gr, 165gr Speer...all way under an inch. My rifle is heavy varmit w/26in bbl..Not many carry rifles here any further than the jeep to the stairs on the blind..Rifle is effecient and accurate, and not particular..If I wanted to hunt elk...I'd go to 150gr Barnes X Don

308 for me. I have had several, and all were shooters. Im realli liking the sps tac versions. I had just the regular tactical, and have since traded it for the AAC-SD and both were/are shooting .3xx" groups at 100. I have no complaints on the 308.

I've killed most everything with a 243 win and 100gr Hornady InterLock BTSP. I can put them in one hole. I think a 7mm-08 is nice too.
The 308 and 30.06 are perfect in theory. I've found they are not as versatile as one would think. You really have to find an ammo it likes based on velocity, bullet type, and twist rate. Once you find a bullet it likes usually in the 160-180gr range, they work well.
I have to agree with Rustler on the 7.08 and if I did it all again with one rifle, it would be a 7mm.08

you know how you buy guns and some shoot and some dont, well i feel the 308 is probably the most consistent accurate caliber in what ever gun you buy.

308 or 30-06, 308 has better ammo availability at cheaper prices, 30-06 you have slightly more versatility but most of what you could hunt with a 30-06 you could still hunt with a 308. I'm just another echo in this room but 308 if you got to pick one.

30-06 is probably the best all around caliber. from gophers to grizzleys! No doubt about that. Don't even need a 30-06 short magnum either.
To be determined

the .308 and 7mm-08 are all you need, the magnums and wsms are "ego guns" you dont need them, most people cant shoot them, just want to be known to shoot em, in Texas, the .22-250 is plenty but the .308 aint got a thing to prove. the 7-08 is just a lighter recoiler with just as good or better balllistics....unless you are a "follower"

It's not exactly a caliber that will wow you. I like rounds that jump out the gates.
