Can anybody tell me about Davy Crockett National Forest? How's their hunting mainly. Was thinking about checking it out over the Thanksgiving holiday. Going to stay west of Kennard at the 565 camp area. Is this a good area for hunting? Hunters overcrowded? Any info will help. Thanks!

I mainly hunt the type 2 land on davy crockett (Alabama Creek WMA) There is a lot of good deer in the area but you really have to get out and look for them. I've been hunting this part of Davy Crockett since 99 and really did not find a good honey hole untill about five years ago. Word of advice when you do find a good spot with good deer movement don't tell anyone they will be right in there on top of you. Keep it to yourself and tell them not to be lazy and find a spot.

There is no other hunting like the forest. With the pine trees swaying in the morning breeze. You can hear the breese coming way before it actually gets to where you are. As far as the deer go, I have been out of the loop for a while but I have killed a few deer there, small bucks. But, my son has taken a few nice ones and I know for a fact there are some big dear in there some where. Very smart and weary dear in the forest, like jerimy said, find a good spot and remember it. The further off the beatin trail you go the better off you will be, as far as some of the other lazy hunters go. Also, I remember, holiday weekends being the busiest. Let us know how it turns out, I will be out there soon, as soon as I get out of here that is.

Man there are Big bucks there and my uncle was there last month for bow season said they didnt have to leve camp to shoot a deer they where 50 feet from them. But here are the good and bad if you go 2 to 3 miles in past the lazy people you can find the 18 point buck you dream about. Cus my uncle missed one few years back bad thing is you have to drag his big [censored] out. Becuse you cant drive anything in there. Here is a idea camp where u have 2 and leav park your truck on side of rd and walk in where know one is hunting

I was raised in Alto, and grew up hunting there. Be very careful
much around it is private land, and the hunters from Houston & Dallas used to purchase new rifles, scopes, get them bore sigted
at the gun shop and come hunting...Got shot out of a tree by an
idiot in 61 who thought he was shooting a bear...Parts of it are
all rigt, but if there are no tracks...no game...they do not fly.
Good Hunting...Don

As Don said there is lots of private land there bordering the forest. Ours for instance borders the forest on 2 sides. We're having problems with folks parking at the border of our property and walking down the fire lane to hunt. I know it is their right to do so as long as they stay on the forest side, but we hunt too and have 2 houses on property - not very safe if you ask me. I've seen folks go in without the requirred orange also. I wish they'd make a law requirring forest hunters to stay so many yards from the private land. Some hunters know what they are doing but some will shoot at anything that moves. I heard shots last night (from forest) after legal hunting time. Could have been shooting at hogs or coyote but it was so dark, I doubt they could tell exactly what they were shooting.

it is wise to scout the bordering public land (through asking around) just as hard as you scout the NF to find a place to hunt.

there's so much of it that's not hunted b/c folks want to hunt "the big woods/big sections". Some parts of it you can sit and watch 20-50 deer an evening pour out of NF into private fields.

Yah they keep it up a little better than the NF burn the underbrush and keep the predetor population down. little bit more strict but for $48 you cant beat it.

yea i have it, you have to have the APH to hunt on all public land, but WMA's do have different rules then the other units.
