Raised in Rocky Top. Deer hunted there until I left in 1995. The deer are small in body weight overall--a mature buck will probably field dress at around 110-120 on average. Antler characteristics are typical of Hill Country deer--a few good deer are killed every year but a 140-class deer is a monster on most places. Considering the drought and all the subdividing down there now, I suspect that the average quality has decreased.
The upside is that you will see plenty of deer and maybe even some exotics.

I hunted just North of Rocksprings for a few years. I never saw any bucks that I would consider "monsters" but we killed some nice looking 120-130 class deer. Lots of Axis running around out there too. That was one of my favorite places to hunt even though the deer were not huge. We saw LOTS of game between the deer, axis, and pigs. If you can find some water to hunt that's where we had the most luck. Good luck, it's a fun place to hunt.

I never hunted out there, but had friends who did for years. They shot some nice deer but the body size was smaller then the deer we shot up north. I still wouldn't pass up the opportunity to hunt there.

I would hunt there in a minute, it is beautiful, plenty of game, and isolated. I would suspect the deer are small, unless the area you are hunting has been well managed then you might see some monster 150 plus deer.

Vanguard, we just purchased a place 20 miles south of Rocksprings on 377 this year. Mail Trail Ranch. Only been on the land for about 2 months and have some trail camera pics of some nice young bucks (110-120 2.5 yr olds). Ill load some pics next weekend when we are out there again.

O I'm for sure going , Was told last night there are exotics on the place along with pretty good whitetail . In the seven yrs that they have had this place they have taken 2 12pointers alot of 10's and 8's . It is real isolated campers are on top of the mountain and they hunt on the down side of it . I really just need to get away from work ,cellphone, and the everyday BS . This sounds like the place i need to be at . Now if the 6 weeks would just hurry up and get here !

I have 230 acres about 36 miles south of Rocksprings off of 377 and I have seen some nice bucks on the trail cam, but it was dark. Going out again in a week to collect the latest photos from 8 cameras so we will see what there is.
I'll post them when I get them, but I did see a huge Aoudad last time, really large turkeys, a LOT of deer, and a ton of Axis.. so, should be a good year since I added a couple water tanks this last month.

Hunting is easy..it's getting permission from your wife that is tough.
