practice at 40+, it will make the closer shots easier this was kinda my thoughts on the matter, and i think most of yall are right, there are to many factors and every situation will be entirly different then another so it is impossible to tell yes or no, it will have to be a judgment call in the moment. Hearing yall say that it isnt impossible makes me comforitable, will i take that shot, who knows, hopfully i wont have to and can just drill it at 15-20. Thanks for all the feed back guys!

We all know today's equipment will do it. But I'm with Passthru & Bjankowski. With adrenaline and no crystal ball to tell me what the deer's gonna do upon release, I'm still an "inside 30 yds" guy. I like this way of thinking

Don't do it unless your pulling enough wieght to get good penetration. If your breaking 300 Fla, and you are accurate , 40 yds. Is perfectly acceptable.

after shooting today at 50, no way i would try for a shot that far on an animal. too much arrow drop and it hangs in the air too long.
40, the deer is in trouble.
I really like to keep it around 30 though, imo its not too close or too far
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I practice at all distances out to 50, but for the most part about 90% of that is at 40. That way it makes the close stuff easy.

I see plenty at 40 yards, but always seem to take the gamble of waiting to see if they come in closer, or there are others coming in that I can't see, that I may spook with that shot. Majority of the time they do come closer, especially if I'm hunting over corn or acorns. That said, if it was a wall hanger, the arrow would certainly fly at 40 if it felt right.

You are taking all the fun out of bow hunting shooting at 40+ or even 30+ yards ( you might as well use a gun )the thrill for me is to see how close I can be 5 to 15 yards is ideal ( draw aim shot with out being seen or heard now that is bow hunting at it's best)

I started bow hunting to extend hunting season. I got hooked by having deer at 20 yds and knowing the kill wasn't in the bag. Sat. morning, I saw my hit list deer at about 45 yds. He walked. I took it as scouting for gun season. If he continues this pattern for the rest of bow season, I'll know exactly where and when to find him.

This is an old topic that keeps rearing its ugly head. It is the same argument with gun hunting. It all depends on how often you practice and how comfortable you are with your weapon, period.

It depends on the area you are hunting. If you are on a HF, then take the shot, the deer will never leave your area, and if down you know you will eventually find it. On LF, don't unless you are comfortable with that shot. Can of worms officially opened. It sounds bad but a good test is to take culls or does at that distance and see how you do. After you have practiced that shot of course. It never feels good to wound anything, but it hurts a heck of lot more to wound that big boy.

I have a friend who keeps telling me that 30-40 yards from a ground blind is too far to hit a deer. When i was practicing with my broadheads in my blind saturday i was dead on all the way out to 40 yards... What are yall's thoughts. Have your friend tie a rope to your target. Every time he hears you release an arrow, have him give the rope a good jerk. See how "dead on" you are then. Not saying anything about anything except that you put a little more realism into the equation.

Even when I went to the bowhunter education course a few years ago, they tried to push "anything over 30 was unethical." I argued the point.
I started bowhunting when I was stationed in Arizona. Out there they will tell you if you can't shoot out to at least 60 yds, stay home. There are no feeders or trails, just open spaces.
After I explained this, the the bowhunter ed instructors said "well, that makes since for that area." Ethical is ethical no matter where you are. The only difference is the "norm" for the area you are hunting. In thick wooded areas it may be unlikely to ever need to shoot over 30 yds, but that does not make it unethical.
And off the rant...

And off the rant... You're assuming all animals react the same to the sound of a bow release. Whitetails jump the string with unbelievable reflexes. Mule Deer and Antelope are so stupid they just stand there and watch the arrow fly towards them. Big diference.

I always practice at 60, but would not take a shot at that distance. It does great things for your confidence at <40yds, and confidence is everything to me.

When I shot a compound, I practiced out to 60 yards too and likewise would never have shot at a deer that far away.
In my younger days, I had a 9' pool table in my apartment. After endless hours of playing on a 9' table, I could wipe the slate clean on a 7' bar pool table. Same theory.
