Cool mounts there. My opinion is stick with the stain grade lumber for bases. Antlers if stained(painted?), should be less dark. Not big on the painted skulls. Pretty nice regardless my opinion...

Thanks..The antlers that are stained were so sun bleached that they soaked up everybit of one coat and stayed that way.They actually looked retarded being so white that it even looked more fake than the fake stain.

I like your wooden backs a lot but I like the bleached skulls better than the painted.

I like the white skull and Texas plaque the best! Very nice.

I do like the way you are experimenting with diff. colors. I think the antlers on the green skull would have looked better if they were a diff. color stain than the plaque.

I saw a red boar skull this past weekend at the Texas Trophy Hunters Ext. and I thought that looked great.

It may be cool to paint other skulls in school colors... just thinkin out loud.

Really cool what you are doing. They are not ugly by any means. It is just a whole new look. I would love to have one done in Maroon and white, seeing as I am an Aggie. My sister is a Longhorn though, and I have nothing against UT.

But I would actually like to have something like that done with a maroon skull with a white ATM on it or something. And of course the same Texas plaque, maybe stained a little lighter depending on the darkness of the horns.

I went to LSU but I don't know if purple and gold would look good??? Maybe if it was on an alligator skull.

I am sure some school colors will look awesome and others may not work.

I've always wanted a chromed skull. Not a fake metal skull but a real skull (pig, deer, bear, coyote, etc...) that is covered in chrome. I don't even know if that is possible.

No its actually more OD green..It doesnt really look it in the pictures,but it is pretty close.Pics dont do these justice at all.

Rustoleum from Lowes I think. I then put a clear coat on them to protect the finish.As long as you take the time to spray light coats you will do fine.

I have been thinking about this as well...Now I need to get another skull to try it on...Now that I think about it..I have some cull deer to try it out...Hmmmmmmm

I agree with everyone on the Texas mount, but the colored ones are interesting.

The only thing I would do differently is use a flat colored olive drab or flat black and do away with the gloss or semi gloss altogether.

I've stained sun bleached antlers before and a light oak stain works best for those type, since it mimics the natural color to some degree.

You can stain the bases up to the dog catchers a little heavier or even use a dark oak stain there and then just coat the antlers with several coats to reach the darkness you want.

They will soak in the stain and that is why you want to start off with a very light colored stain from the start, since you can always darken them but once dark, it's near impossible to lighten them up.

I am not real sure if I like em or not, I could see buying one as decor, but not mounting one I killed...I dunno if that makes sense or not.
