I grew up fishing and have fished my whole life. That being said, I am new to hunting and owning guns altogether. I am going to buy shotgun in the next few weeks. The question I have is a broad one. What shotgun should I buy. I anticipate that I will concentrate on birds(dove, waterfowl, trky) and skeet(trap, clay pigeons). I have plenty of family and friends that have thrown their own opinion in the hat, but I figured I would go straight to the horses mouth on this topic. I have heard Remington 870 alot, but Im open to anything(Pump,O/U,Auto). Again, keep in mind that I am new to the scene. Thank you in advance for your advice.

You can't go wrong with an 870. Very reliable...and a straight shooter. I've got one with the rem choke barrel and can change chokes from imp cyl to extra full depending on what I am after. You should be able to pick up one for $300 or less. Oh and BTW

I tell you the same thing I tell people new to bow hunting, shoot ever gun you can get your hands on. Call all your buy one. Shoot them all, autos, pumps, o/u, side by sides. Each gun shoots differently. A lot of your choice may be due to financial reasons. Shotguns can cost from $200 up to how ever much you want to pay. As for the 870 it is a work horse of Remington they just keep on shooting.

870 like stated above is almost fail safe.A great new affordable auto loader is the Weatherby SA 08.Definately worth checking out.

I would rule out an O/U as a first choice in your situation. For the mere fact that you only get 2 shots and being new, that third shot will give you one more opportunity. I do shoot an over under for dove and turkey because I thats what Im more comfortable with. But for ducks, I shoot a pump 870 because you might only get a chance at a few birds and I like the 3rd shot. I also have a Mossberg 88 pump that I use when hunting out of my kayak that has held up well, and cheap enough to throw away or not cry about if lost.
I would suggest an 870, new at Academy they are $279 and your options are unlimited as far as aftermarket chokes, barrels, pistol grips, etc. There are just a ton of options for that gun.
Thats my $.02, and welcome.

870 in my opinion is the way to go. I've got 3 of them and all get used hard and never have failed.

here is an honest question: how much money do you have to spend? There are good shotguns in every price range, as well as crappy shotguns. If you say $500 we can tell you one thing, if you say $1500 it is a completely different answer.

For a pump: Benelli Nova about $375
For an auto: Stoeger 2000 about $500
Honestly, if I were you, I'd go with the pump. You'll get a higher quality firearm in a pump for that price range. Also, a pump is less forgiving with a longer time between shots, and will teach you to shoot better. That's why you typically start kids off with a single shot or pump

Alright alright alright....does anybody here have any clue that Remington doesn't use the same quality parts that they used to??? For those people out there who have bought an 870 here recently and hunt ducks and geese know good and well that they will eventually hang up due to cheaper parts. I once ha 2 friends who were buying their first shotguns for duck season, I told them both to get 870s...both had the same problems of hanging up when shooting magnum loads. Also took some clients out last season who shot 870s, had the ducks come in and everybody fired off one shot then couldn get their second shots off due to the gun hanging up, which didnt surprise me one bit. I have nothing against remington at all, I actually own an older 870 and 1100 that I love but I just couldn't see somebody throw their money at that company now days...but who knows, maybe you'll get a good one. This is also a problem with their NEW 1100s and 11-87s. As for my choice of a pump to recommend it would be a Browning BPS or an 870 WINGMASTER (used of course) For a semi auto it would be a model 2000 or the beretta from wal mart. If you would of posted this thread in the migratory bird section you would get alot of different answers than you are here. Here's a few links for the folks that think I'm full of it. http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=37141http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1200754http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/guns/279178-remington-870-express-what-happend-remington.htmlhttp://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-215150.html

I grew up with an 870 and still have it, but now shoot a Binelli Nova and I love it. I wanted a gun that would shoot up to 3 1/2" shells because I got to go goose hunting. I use it for everything now. I love how easy the gun comes apart for cleaning and the thing is a tank.

I have a really nice 870 for sale - $275. I'm selling it because I finally bought my dream shotgun - a 12ga O/U.

But I do have an old wingmaster and its my favorite shotgun. However your statement that you would recommend an older wingmaster but not an 870 seemed weird because as far as I know the wingmaster has the same exact parts as the 870...just nicer wood. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Anything that Remington made that's a little older are solid guns...the 870, wingmaster, 1100, 1187 were all top notch guns...now days parts are cheaper and quality lacks. I would never knock an old Remington, but the new ones are junk. If you haven't had a problem with a new one yet then it hasn't been put to the test.

As stated several times the 870 is hard to beat!!
If some animals are good at hunting and others are suitable for hunting, then the Gods must clearly smile on hunting.
