since i already have a .22-250, a .270 and a .30-06, i don't hunt elk or other large game, I would probably get either a weatheby in .257 wby or a ruger No. 1 varminter in 6.5 creedmoor.
but....I don't have a lever gun and would't mind getting a nice 30-30.
it'd be a hard choice

while im not against multi 30-06's I bet he does not want another so I would say get your self the 257
learn something new everyday and you will have never wasted a day.

A hundred or two more will get you a Remington 700 5R Milspec.

A hundred or two more will get you a Remington 700 5R Milspec. They are around 900- 1000 new.

Remington 700 in whatever I could come across first 6MM Remington, .257 Roberts
If I could not find either of those a Marlin GBL in 45-70

Remington 700 bdl chambered in 260 Remington and save the rest, till I got some extra scratch, for a nice scope.

This just may only be me, but given what you already have then I would get a volquartsen in 17hmr. I would love to have a high end, ultra accurate, semi-auto 17hmr.

REMINGTON 5R COSTS 1109.00 HERE IN TYLER,, FOR 20" BARRELL THREADED ON SOME OF THE NEW 5Rs.. ALSO FOUND A TIKKA HEAVY BARRELL FOR 609.00.. BOTH IN 308 AND TACK DRIVERS.. 25-06 OR 7MM08 ARE GOOD CALIBER CHOICES THAT YOU CAN GO TO WAL MART IN A PINCH AND PICK UP AMMO..

marlin 336 in 30-30, add a 1-4x20mm weaver and keep the change (probably 700-600 bucks)
