Here's a picture of Bos Gaurus Readei trophy shot during the 50's getting a new paint job and polish. Rt. horn outside curve (OC) is 30.5", Lt. horn OC is 30" Widest outside is 34 inch and tip to tip measures 17", circumference of horn at base is 19inch for both. Let me know if you want to see more trophies like these. I have a sambur and another gaur, with more massive horns but slightly shorter.

70+ views and just one reply.. ....well, then here you go with the pic of a sambur trophy. Don't remember the measurement but I think the last time I measured it scored within the top 10 on the SCI record. I'll post the measurement soon.

Gaur is an intense species. Where was it shot?

This gaur was shot right at the border between India and Burma with a good old fashion musket by my grand father who was a pretty good hunter back in the day. Took a couple of shots and tracking/trailing for two days.

Are Gaur considered buffalo, wild cattle, or wild oxen?

Bufflao, I believe & the biggest as well (bigger than American or Cape). I think there is some type of hunting restrictions on 'em.

They belong to Bos family which is bovine, closer to cows than buffaloes. There are now protected animals, since 1972 in India, I don't know about their status in Burma, and elsewhere IUCN has classified them as endangered species. so no more hunting these fine animals for now. Trophies are also extremely rare, that's why most of them date from pre-banned eras. Check out rowland ward's record of game animals for more info on them.

Fine animals!! It's a shame we can no longer hunt pure-blooded Gaur. They are beautiful critters.....
I believe there are a couple places in Texas that have hybrid Gaur to hunt, but they do not look quite as unique.

There's a ranch in western Nebraska that was for sale a while back that had some. Not sure what happened to them after sale. Believe they were pure (at least they looked it from the pics)

Thanks to all of those who bothered to reply. Makes it worth all the effort. Here's a shot of the shortest one of the bunch, although its also the most massive one of the three that I have with me. Measurement: Rt.OC 25", Lt.OC 25", Circumference of both base 22", widest outside is 38" The one in the background is the same 28 incher from above, I am still working on it.
