Thanks again to your cousin. B17 daytime losses were running very high (40%) till we were able to get the P51 with aux fueltanks as round trip escorts. Then we owned the skys. RIP Sgt. Emil E. Havelka

RIP Emil. Thank you for your sacrifice. My grandparents and parents lived through the occupation in Holland and if not for the sacrifice of people like this my life would be very different.

I will add my thanks for bringing this back. My Dad was Army Air Corps in WWII and made it back.

Thats awesome. The soldiers, sailors, and airmen from WWII are the greatest warriors of all time. If it weren't for their sacrifices we would all be speaking Japanese or German by now.

Enjoyed reading it again. Great write up about a true hero. I bet it was really hard see all the plane for a mission leaving and the wait to count and determine who and how many never returned. I knew a couple of brothers that were farmers (named Maticezk sp) Both of them air crewed B17s. They loved to tell about their war stories. I do remember the younger on was disabled because on a flight it was extremely cold and fingers and toes froze He had to have some finger removed on both hands and limited use of remaining fingers. Thanks
