My brother was tearing down a shed when a skunk ran out from under it. He heard what sounded like baby mice and then found 6 of these lil guys. They are probably to young to make it without momma but I was thinking bout trying to keep them alive. Anybody ever done it? Is it even legal to keep them?

Sir,

Baby skunks and field mice make the most excellent big bass bait.
I took some of my largest Bass with them.

they make good pets had several when i was younger living in graham go to pet smart get some supplement milk you will have to feed them often and you will have to use a wet warm washcloth to get them to use the bathroom they will make the same type of pet as a ferrett, will use a litter box like a cat. When they get older you can take to vet get them desented same as they do ferretts

By morning it would probably be too late, they need to be fed every 4 hours or so. Like kittens. Get kitten formula & a little bottle.

I've done it. They are cool and not hard to raise or train but make sure you can find someone that will descent them before you go to the trouble of raising them.

So are dogs

rolleyes

Just because they "can" be carriers of rabies doesn't mean they are.
They say armadillo are "carriers" of leprosy that only means that they can carry it like humans.

You can get their Scent Spraying glands taken out... Then they make awesome pets... They stomp their feet before fake spraying you when they are angry.

They are basically cats when they are descented. Cats make good pets for some people, not for me, but I can see how seeing that little one would make someone want to keep it. I'd paint it though.

I have had 6 in my life time, they are very good pets. They are just like cats, not much differance. Well maybe a little more temper, but I was pretty hard on mine to mind. Good Luck.

Came across a road killed mom skunk and a little one roaming around in the road confused. I held her by the tail outside the window till i got to the farm. Made her a box with the towel thing, just as you have. She was older and didn't need mom's milk to survive. Fed her cat food and other stuff. After a trip to the vet next day, she didn't want to be without me. Followed me everywhere. Named her Rosebud. 1967...

I read somewhere once that keeping skunks as domestic pets is illegal in texas. Maybe that is just with regards to domestic-bred skunks. Does anyone know the legality of keeping them as pets?

As far as providing for them, a wildlife rehabber can help out. This website also looks interesting: http://www.skunksaspets.com/index.htm

I had a pet skunk when I was 17 yo. It grew up after it was wened eating can dog food. She weighed about 45# when fulled grown. She would follow me everywhere like a dog and every time she saw my father. She would chase him and then turn and raise her tail up, like she wanted to spray him. I sure miss "Sweet Pea"

A 45 pound skunk? Sweet Pea must have dipped into your steroid stash to get that big... 45lb skunk would give me nightmares...

Why is everyone always so worried about dang rules? You found the little skunks so it's your decision what you do with them. If you want to keep them as pets, keep them as pets. TPWD has more important things to worry about than some guy that was kind enough to nurse some baby skunks and keep them healthy and decided to keep them around... or at least they should have other things to do.

Worst case scenario is they confiscate the skunks and fine ya. Surely the penalty for keeping a skunk is less than that of a DUI right?

If you are successful in raising him to matuirity; be careful hom nuch you feed him. Being a wild animal they tend to eat all they can get and will get overweight. I had one many years ago and she was a super pet. She had the run of the place and would startle guest when she would walk into the room unannounced.

Boy I dont miss that part at all!!!!

I found a 2-3 day old Squirrel a few years ago and raised her to full maturity. First 2 weeks I had to get up every 2 hours every night to feed her. It was a lot of work but very rewarding. I would probably never do it again though.

For those that would like to know the skunk is still alive. He seems to be developing more of an appetite but I havent noticed any change in size. Eyes and ears still shut. He sleeps beside my bed and goes to work with me everyday.

Heres a short video. He's trying hard to find a nipple. He makes some really weird sounds you can hear if you listen close.

Had a family member bring me another baby skunk today. She said a co-worker found him in her yard. He is younger than the first one I got. Still has a crusty umbilical cord on its belly. Must have been a good year for the skunks or something.

Did everything I could but the little one didnt make it. He was really dehydrated when i got him. The first one is still doing good. His eyes are trying to open. I can see shiny eyes in the slits of his eyelids. His belly is so fat he drags it on the carpet when he walks. Because of this we named him Scooter.

Continue the good luck with the new family member. Just an idea but you might want to get a kitten to keep it company. Keep us posted on Scooter. Any new pics? clap

He's still doing good. Starting to get a little bit bigger and his hair is longer. I'll try to get an updated video of him on here today. His walking is getting more graceful but he still gets tripped up sometimes and ends up on his back. Its too funny!

Here is a pic where you can see his eyes are opening. I think he can see a little bit but not that great yet.

Here is a video of him walking around. I put the tv remote in for size reference.

I have always wanted a skunk. Bad thing is you cant take them to the vet in Texas they will report you. If you want to get him denatured you might be able to do it in Oklahoma I think they are leagle there to keep as pets. And dont let him bite anyone or they will confiscate him and kill him to do a test on his brain to check for Raibies. By the way good job on keeping him going.

Getting bigger and fluffier everyday. You can really notice a difference when you look back at the first pic. He stomped his feet for the first time the other day. I guess he thinks he's tuff. Lol

Found this:

Texas Illegal (512)389-4647, Russell is the contact.
NO PET SKUNK PERMITS ARE GIVEN OUT! You have to send a letter to Texas Wildlife Dept. and Texas Dept. of Health to get a letter of authorization to keep a skunk. They are NOT issuing any letters of authorization at this time because of the rabies outbreak in the state. You would also need a Fur Bearer propagator permit, cost $75.00. These are given after an inspection of the facility. This is for a commercial business ONLY. Only other permits for skunks are Educational (non-profit, in addition to USDA Class B or Class C) and Zoological.

Not saying anyone asked and I don't know how old it is. Was giving the guy some contact into to see if he could get a permit and if he wanted to keep it to NOT take it to a TX vet.

Ive read just about everything on keeping pet skunks and unfortunately I can never have Scooter as a pet legally. He is about 4 weeks old now and it doesnt look like I will find anyone to descent him. I dont consider him to be a wild animal anymore but the state does. I dont know if he would even make it in the wild when he gets old enough to be released. The family has become attached and it looks like a sad day is coming.

I'm not sure I fully understand why they can't be kept as pets as long as a rabies test is done, but I wish you the best of luck keeping him happy and healthy.

I think because in order to test for rabies they have to cut off their head.

Thats for real man, not a joke. Rabies tests require testing brain tissue.

I think I found the states reasoning, there isn't a PROVEN rabies vaccination for skunks. That makes perfect sense now, would be a cool pet regardless.

My mother in law had one way back when that they kept for a couple years with spraying abilities. No one got sprayed as the skunk just assumed them as parents and didn't feel threatened.

As long as the skunk is outside and not in a pen, how can it be considered a pet??

You are allowing it to do as it pleases...

I thought it was illegal to transport skunks and raccoons in TX? Thought it was in the hunting handbook every year...

Wow. I haven't checked this thread since you originally posted. Very cool that he has made it this far. We had a pet skunk "Genie" for a few years when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. She was very cool and she had a tremendous dislike for adult men. Think it was b/c my dad was not to fond of the skunk for a pet idea. Everytime either of my grandpa's would come to the house she would back them into a corner. It was hilarious.

Scooter doesnt like anybody that comes over to our house. I guess he can smell them. He gets defensive and starts giving warning stomps. I have kept my 7yr old away from him this whole time and when she comes into the room now he starts his stomping. Its pretty cute now but Im scared it will lead to him spraying before too long.

he is cute, but you don't want that skunk smell in the house. My wife still has not completely forgiven me over that one.

I let the chihuahua out in the back yard one night. She was behind the Oleander bushes in the back corner of the yard and it sounded like she had a possom backed into the corner. I was standing on the patio and couldn't see her. I told her to "get him". Well, a little more growling, barking, and rustling, and the biggest skunk I've ever seen cam tearing out of the bushes with the Chihuahua right on his tail. He have her another shot before I got her called off of him.

My mistake was taking him upstairs into our master bathroom to try to bathe her. I didn't have tomato juice, so I used tomato sauce and tomato paste. Of course, I put it on her, and she shoot, spraying that stuff all over the bathroom.

After bathing her, I put her in the laundry room for the night. I should have put her in her kennel out in the garage or on the back patio.

It took about 3 weeks of Lamp Berger, Fabreeze, commercial deoderizer put in the air returns, etc to get the smell out of the house. Of course, the smell was on our clothes, so we had to fabreeze ourselves when we left. I sent the kids to my parent's house for a night or 2, and the clothes in their bag mad my mother's car smell like skunk.

Oh, and since the father-in-law is a veterinarian, I took her to him to get the smell out. They kept her for almost a week and bathed her daily. The smell was MOSTLY gone. I figure she must have been hit 3 or 4 times. Man, I sure hope we never have that sort of thing happen again.

Sorry for the quality, dont have the home computer. Scooter and Mrs CritterGetter playing. I could really use some help guys. I know somebody can help me with scooter. He wont make it in the wild before he starts spraying. So realeasing him is not an option. I WILL NOT let him die. I dont want to "help" him myself but I will if I have to. Last time im asking.

No luck on getting a vet for descenting? How about the legal issues of keeping him? Hope everything turns out for the best.

Spoke to a guy this weekend who has de-scented skunks before. Not sure how old his was, but there are two glands. With help he said they pulled the two glands out a 1/4 to 1/2 inch and clipped them. What ever you do, don't bust the gland. He recommended gloves, suit and face shield. Said his friend (Vet) agreed to help, but would not perform the procedure himself.

so one person sharpens another.

They? Its just Scooter and no he hasnt sprayed. Skunks dont spray as much as people think. He spooks easily so I make sure he knows Im coming before I reach for him. I think its because his eyesight isnt very good and he cant tell whats coming at him.

I had one as a kid. Had it worked on so as not to spray. Still had a kind of musky smell even after that. Mom made me keep it outside because of that. Had it for about a year and then it disappeared.

My wife is the only other person who handles him. He stomps his feet at everybody else. I think he smells them and knows they are strangers.

In the last two days Scooter's behavior has taken a drastic change for the worse. I realized that I was going to have to release Scooter since I couldnt descent him. I took scooter to the country to let him have a supervised visit to the wild. Today when I went to pick him up he tried to bite me and was acting viscious. And then the dreaded smell. It wasnt real bad but it was definately a small spray. I was hoping to release scooter myself but Its looking like I made need to take him to somebody who can handle him better than me. I just want the best for him and hope I can find a rehabilatator to take him in.

Can you maybe let him hang about outside and leave him food until he can forage on his own? Not sure if you are in a location where that is even possible.

He hasnt been weined off his milk yet. Hasnt even figured out how to drink water from a bowl. He sticks his nose in it and tries to sniff. He did drink a syringe full of water though. I got him to eat a small grasshopper yesterday so hopefully I can start weining him soon.

Do you have him in a cage?? If so get one of those water bottles like you see in Hamster or Rabbit cages that hangs upside down and has a metal nipple with a ball stoper to keep it from leaking. I think Wal-Mart has them for around $3. When I had my Squirrel thats what I taught her to drink out of and she figured it out real quick since she was already use to geting milk from the eye droper syringe. May even want to put some milk on the tip of the metal nipple so it can smell it.

Great story and pictures. I do not think he can ever be returned to the wild because of his lack of fear of humans.

Wow that thing looks like fun! It would be cool to have a baby skunk. And my wife watched it and now SHE wants a baby skunk. Awesome pictures and videos. We like watching it get bigger. I'd like to know how it goes when he develops his glands.

I did some looking around here in the Austin area and found these people. They might be the kind of people you are looking for to take over Scooters rehabilitation back to the wild. They have pics of skunks they have helped. Here is the link: http://austinareawildliferehab.org/

Hi,
I joined this site just so I could give you this info.I am a wildlife rehab assistant in north tx. STILL LEARNING . I am currantly rehabbing 6 baby skunks , 5 sibling (8weeks) + 1(5weeks). They are much harder to deal with than some other critters I have rehabbed, Amazing escape artists.
Aside from rabies they are carriers of roundworm , hookworms, tapeworms n many others. Do NOT put your hands near your mouth or your eyes. Wash your hands anytime you handle Scooter. Tuck his tail when you pick him up . (he wont spray himself) Mine take a formula made for skunks from fox valley in Arizona. They also love scrambled eggs.
Scooter is very cute , as are mine n very tempting to keep as a pet. But it would not be fair to them , n you would be miserable in the long run. As adults they can be very distructive. besides they are illegal to keep as a pet in tx. Weird that you can have a monkey or a wolf in tx but not a skunk or raccoon .
Here is the e-mail to a rehabber in your area. I have personally spoke to her for info on my skunks ,She is very nice n has a lot of knowledge on the subject. She takes skunks, most rehabbers do not. I found her thru a website called Skunk Haven, awsome website!!
Her name is Bonnie , Her e-mail is dovekey@gmail.com or @ 713-548-4718
Please contact her , she will be of great help
Good Luck n Thanks for saving Scooters life

Scooter has been off his milk for the last few days now and seems to be doing fine without it. Got him eating moist dogfood mainly. Only drawback is it made his poop smell awful! I got him a litter box but I think he's a little confused. He poops in his bedding and sleeps in the litterbox...
I let him have free run of the house while we are home and he follows my wife and I everywhere we go.

Scooter followed my wife to bed and fell asleep outside our bedroom door.

When I walked up he woke up and didnt recognize me. This is a vid of how scooter acts when he is trying to intimidate a stranger. He thinks he's a real tough guy stomping and dragging his feet, back arched and tail poofed out like a proud peacock! rofl
Sorry its sideways, cant figure out how to rotate a video.

Yes Scooter is going to a rehabber tomorrow to start learning how to be a wild skunk. I know its the best thing for him but I'm not very thrilled about it. I'll take some pics and give a final update tomorrow.

That is sad, I talked to a couple of vets and even though they wanted to help you out it just was not anyways close to the risk involved. I hope he makes it.

I made a very long 1.5 hour trip to to take Scooter to his new home today. After getting there and meeting Lorraine Im feeling a little better about the whole deal. She is a very nice lady and you can tell she is an animal lover. She had Scooter all set up in his own room with all kinds of toys and treats. I stayed for about an hour watching him check out his new surroundings and he looked very happy with all the new stuff to smell and get into. Found out that Scooter loves meal worms and cherios. Lorraine said Scooter was going to be ready for release in about 6 weeks as long as we arent in a drought still. Best part about it all is that she said she would keep me posted on his progress and send pics. She also said I can come visit anytime! Im really hoping to get to be there for his release. Here are a few pics of him and some of the other critters I got to see today.

Hey JCB, this look familiar? Tiny baby squirrel

This is a baby heron she is rehabbing.

Yep that baby squirrel looks VERY familiar!!! happy3

Here are a few pics of the one I found and raised:

The day I found her. Everyone told me it was a rat. rofl

Geting a little hair on her.

Geting bigger.

About half grown and eyes open.

Full grown and ready for release.

You did a really good job with Scooter! I know its a lot of work but its rewarding to know you saved something from certin death even if it is a critter frowned upon by a lot of people.

Here is an update about Scooter and some pics Lorraine sent.
Quote:
Hey, sorry its taken me so long to get back with you, things have been a little busy lately, seems like i got a baby squirrel every 3 or 4 days. The drought has a lot of animals abandoning their babies. Every 3 or 4 hour feedings really can put a kink in ones schedule! All the better for Scooter, just means i'm in the kitchen more and he's out more. I even leave him out in there while i'm sitting in the living room watching tv at night. I can hear exactly what he's getting in to, he can even open the kitchen cabinets to get inside. : ) Things are critter proof so he cant get into any trouble, just have to clean up behind him like a little kid. His favorite place is still behind the dryer, thats where he carries off the the things he finds to destroy or eat. I'm teaching him how to find food with his nose and work for it, wad the worms up in a sheet of newspaper, hide pieces of chicken around, bury worms and food in his dirt, which after playing in it he religiously uses the dirt bowl as litter box. Going to get some frozen mice so he can learn to eat those. His favorite thing to do now is the magic carpet ride, he gets on a little throw rug and i pull him around on it, pretty fast, he crouches down and hangs on like its a surf board. : ) He got a bath last night, not a happy camper by the end of it, seriously pissed and try to bite, the rest of the night he was trying to get me, had to dodge his foot attacks. : ) Today he's all happy again, has his mellow moments when he loves to be held and petted, come about 1 am he turns into the Tasmanian devil and he cracks me up. Skunks fit in well with my routine since i'm a night owl, i kinda leave him alone during the day since his natural behavior should be to sleep during the day and hunt at night. Granted alot of this has nothing to do with rehabilitation and more to do with keeping him mentally and physically stimulated and happy since he cant be released yet. Hoping to move him outside in another week or so, looks like it will start cooling off soon. My husband always jokes after playing with Scooter that he'll never make it in the wild, he is spoiled but should make the transition. Just so you know, no animal is forced to go if they dont want to, i just dont dump them and run. Scooter will have ample time when i take him to make up his mind and choose, if he's not ready we'll try again in another week. Believe me, i dont leave them, they have to leave me. : ( Every great once in awhile a rehabber ends up with an animal that cant be released, it is too bonded or scared to leave your side, or it lacks the correct survival skills. In those cases, at least with myself, i'm committed to that animals well being for the rest of its life, if all its needs are met and its happy in captivity it has a home for life here. I will send more pics tomorrow, the videos i sent were too many gigs, i took some shorter ones but i'm wondering if they didnt go to your phone and only to computer if they would go through. Let me know what you think, and love for y'all to come visit if you get the chance! Lorraine & Scooter

Hunters are such a cold-hearted calloused group of animal killers, aren't they!

What a memorable experience for you, everyone that got to read this saga ... and of course Scooter.

Thanks for giving back!
