cool mag brum but hope it was unloaded for pic since you got your gun fully cocked in your holster an unloaded uncocked gun is worthless! Agreed, my dad was asking me why I always carry one in the chamber, and I told him weather I'm I'm in South Dallas or in the field hunting pigs, it's not a video game, I can't push pause and rack the slide, then hit play, a gangster or a mean sow isn't going to hesitate, so why should I, I have a family and responsibility is to provide and protect them, can't do that if I'm dead.

I have used my .357 to drop several, and I just shot one Friday night at 3' while doing scrambling backwards at an Olympic record pace... It was closest I have had a charging one get. I was in the middle of a field of tall grass with no where to climb or dodge behind and I would have hated to have tried to deal with that situation with my bow only...

I have tried on more than one occasion to get a pig to charge me and hever had any luck. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I've been between a sow and her pigs, heck I've even chased a piglet down, caught it, and held it squealing in hopes that a sow would come after me and nothing happened. To me it's a very low percentage deal- I carry a pistol because I enjoy popping pigs at 10 yds with a snubbie .357 from time to time, not because I plan on using it to defend myself. In the unlikely event that a charge happens, the rifle in your hands is a better tool than a pistol in your belt...

revolvers, at least a .357, autos aint meant for hunting. Kabar works, and 2X on the .357 magnum revolver, and I prefer the large frame. As Boris the Blade says, "Heavy is good. Heavy is reliable." 10 points to whomever can get that movie reference.

Try going hunting with someone who shoots a hog with a bow in the back legs and is sure it is dead "right around here somewhere" and we were bow hunting so I did not have a rifle with me.

I watched two concrete guys run down and kill a 75 lb sow with a 5' piece of rebar. They're not killing machines, they're pigs.

I was not saying it was hogzilla, this was just a little sixty pound sow that went from calm to crazy in a heartbeat as I tried to get my buddy to come dispatch his wounded critter. I am usually one of the first to chime in that hogs are no where near the mega-beast that the media and hunting rags make them out to be, but that does not mean I would want to be empty handed facing one - especially not in the dark. One other thing I should probably mention is that I was out of my usual hard cast SWC loads and pulled out an old box of winchester 110gr JHPs and I would not recommend them for hunting unless you are ear-holing them broadside. The bullet certainly did the job, and would probably be fantastic on a two legged critter, but my forehead shot went through the skull, down the neck, and into a shoulder with massive bullet fragmentation and meat wreckage along the way. I never found anything bigger than a fingernail clipping worth of lead and none of the copper, though I did not split the skull to see what was in there. On a positive note, since I dropped the beast I claimed half the meat and after a few hours in the smoker with a little apple wood it sure was good tonight. -ww

My Glock model 22 (40 S&W) has dispatched a few dozen hogs over the years. A 180 grainer to the noggin or the vitals sure changes their attitude quick.
Hog hunting sidearm was the primary inspiration for purchasing that pistol after I got treed once.
