In Rockport, corn is up to $9.25 for 50# & protein is $12.50 for 50#. Feed store owner says the corn is going to continue going up, don't know about the future of protein prices.......

But is it worth feeding protein now?

I thought protein was only good in the spring for antler development.

Which do the deer prefer to eat? Protein or corn?

I always have some protein going. It helps bucks recover from the rut and are in better shape going into the rut. Also helps the does and fawns. I even mix protein in my spinners during the season with corn. With corn being so ridiculous right now I am actually finding 16- 17% protein cheaper or same as corn.

Dont tell me you shot the 4 point for the meat when there are does all around.

I still have 3 protein feeders out and i can show you multiple pictures that the deer are going to the protein before they go to the corn on the ground. I purchased my protein in bulk, so i am going to feed it until i run out. Should be able to fill the 3 feeders one more time, which will be this weekend.

Called today 6/29/2011 and it is $7.10/bag if you buy 20 or more. And they are about 25 from I-10 and Columbus. The nice lady on the phone said to call and she will give directions the number to the feed store is 979-758-3847. Hope that helps someone. I will be stopping in this week.

Just a word of warning for those of you around DFW - The last couple of times we purchased corn from Russell Feed (Azle and Benbrook locations), the corn @ 10.75/bag was very dirty and a few of the bags had mold.

Russell has been a reliable place in the past, but for the prices they are charging the corn should be cleaner and in better condition.
