be careful out there guys, snakes are showing up in odd places. my friend was very lucky not to of gotten bit last night by a coral snake. he lives in a very developed part of san antonio, in a large neighborhood. he parked his car and stepped out, when he did his foot landed on the head of a small coral snake, thus killing it instantly. he was lucky he didnt land on any other part. i think the drought is causing snakes to venture into areas not normal for snakes.

LOL, just yesterday caught a small Texas rat snake on the shelving of our carport here at home. Little bugger was probably hunting the birds nest on the too shelf. After showing him to the wife I released him back to the woods to go about his business.

Wife killed a 3' rattle snake on the porch while i was out of town. Lots of copperheads and a few rattlers killed on our lot last year. Also one coral snake. But only the one rattler so far this year. Lot's of pigs though. Some say there's a conection.

There is an area of San Antonio that is smack dab in the middle of town that has the highest concentration of coral snakes in the world. We used to find them in our ivy all the time.

And if he was wearing shoes, he'd have been fine. Coral snakes don't have fangs, they have short little teeth. They have to bite your finger or in between your toes and gnaw for several seconds to deliver their venom.

I killed a Copperhead several years ago that I raked out of a hole above my buddy's third=floor apartment door with my keychain. It was eating a baby bird. This was just off off of Callahan Rd. close to Medical Center.

Killed a 3 1/2 foot rattler this weekend. Caught him going in a hole and grabbed him by the tail and pulled him out. Seemed a little hissed when I cut his head off with my Gerber.

saw the first rattler and second snake after 5 years on our lease this afternoon. It was a small one and he crawled off under a rock before I could try and kill him. Momma was probably nearby he was only one and a half foot. Freaked me out pretty good I was planning on stalking around the woods tonight but after that I decided just to sit in the blind.

It is dang near impossible to get bit by a coral snake unless you are messing with it.

Used to see more Coral snakes than I do now. We had them at scout camp.

We kill 6-10 Copperheads a year at my house. Many more other snakes if we wanted to, but we only care about the venomous ones.

Goes with the territory living next to pine forest and a pond.

as others have mentioned he was really in no danger, coral snakes have a really mellow temperment, most will let you handle them without striking. Even as such they have very short fangs at the rear of there mouth so it takes alot to get a "Wet Bite" most bites from corals are non-venomous.

They actually have fangs in the front of their mouth, but they are small. Coral snakes bite by chewing, not striking. It's similar to getting bite by a small rat snake, except if you get bit, kiss your hand good by as their is no anti-venom for them because the government taxed Phizer too much and they stopped making the anti-venom in 2010. However, it is unlikely to have a coral snake bite through clothing, shoes, etc...

My son and I were fishing in a small (about 5 acres) pond Saturday...with dusk coming on, he noticed a HUGE cottonmouth about 30 -40 feet from the boat. That demonic thing noticed us and made a direct line for us. We didn't have any firepower in the boat...but the oar behind the head did the trick...my son had a good swing...no more problems with that snake.

Baby 1 foot rattler on front steps this morning in Rogers ranch subdivision in north San Antonio. I stepped over, as did both my kids, then one turned around to see it. Hated to kill it but there are 14 kids on the cul de sac.

The two year old daughter of a friend was recently playing with some wooden blocks in their living room. She started saying "snake, snake" over and over. He looked over and a small rattler was coiled up in the blocks.

Pretty scary.

With it being their mating season and with the dry conditions it is pretty dangerous to be walking around at night without a light, and without shoes, or only sandles it is asking for trouble even walking in your backyard.

You have to be alert and watch where you put your hands also!

Just because you live in the city doesn't mean you won't see a poisoness snake because this is Texas, and around homes, especially a garden or flower bed, there is plenty of shade, shelter and food for them to eat.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I'd like to take this opportunity to request credit for being the first to discuss the relative non-danger of coral snakes. I feel like others jumped in and are trying to take my credit.

The credit is mine, and I'm laying claim. Thank you.

I never seen a coral, would be cool. I have killed 26 snakes so far this year, and heck no I am not searching for them. I killed a 3 1/2 foot rattle snake today in the deer pens, and went to clean out 2 water gaps this afternoon. I was pulling out some leaves that were balled up and pulled out a 6 in. copperhead, an that one scared me more. I couldn't let go fast enough. We sure need to watch better, seen more already than all of last year.

Have you tested this theory out?

I relocate plenty of snakes every year, and every coral snake I have come into contact with have been very timid snakes. Most herps will agree, as you notice its a snake most everybody handles on alot of the nature shows.

Again Coral represent les than 1% of snake bites, with average of 15-20 per year, it is also one of the most Toxic venoms of poisinous snakes in the US its venom is only Rivaled by the Mojave Rattlesnake for Toxicity. Yet very few people are bitten even of those most can pull the snake off them before they get a wet bite.
