Bear with me, this is my first posting. Taking my son Aoudad hunting in the Davis mountains of West Texas. What is a recommended factory round for his 270 Win. A-Bolt? Thanks.

Any of the major brands premium line should work! If it shoots them well and you hold it steady should end up with dead sheep.
Brayden (Lazy L's Southern Comfort) you will be missed! You were more than a pet you were my reason to rise and return for many days! You were my rock! 12/26/03-10/25/13

You're right, bullet placement is the key. I think I read too much, and everyone has an opinion. Thanks.

Any 270 round will work. When you see a big one with solid muscle mass it wil make you wonder for a second if you need a bigger gun. I do have a question for you. Do you know the difference between an Aoudad in the Davis mountains of West Texas and a Desert Bighorn? Make sure you look at some pictures. We already have Bighorns in West Bandera county. (thats about 75 miles or so from San Antonio) Happy hunting

Happy hunting Desert Bighorns? Who or how did this happen? When did it happen? Not Bighorn habitat I would think. The only Bighorns I had known about out of West Texas where in Dr. Glazes facility in Kerrville in the 90's.

You're right, bullet placement is the key. I think I read too much, and everyone has an opinion. Thanks. X2 I have killed quite a few aoudads with plain old .270 Remington 130 PSP Core-lokts. More young ones than older ones but it worked fine. They have a huge shoulder and muscle area and shot placement is critical. Talk to your guide or outfitter about shot placement.

They have been making a strong comeback. There was also an article a few months back, I think in the Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine. I actually rolled up on two Bighorn rams on Ranch Road 337 between Leakey and Bandera last year and it blew my mind.
I think in a hundred years we ain't going to have nuthin in Texas cept Russian Bore, Axis, and Sheep.
I'm a leveraction person but the old 270 is a good go getter of just about anything.

Making a good comeback in West Texas. I have searched the internet and can not find a link or post to it. Desert Bighorns? I am familiar with the area.

Rest easy my friends, I do know the difference between the two. If I get confused, my outfitter can always slap me in the back of the head. Thanks.

The 270 will work fine. I've seen them drop Elk in their tracks at 200+yds. No worries.

That is a very long ways away from west Texas and there is no way that those sheep would head away from the mountains on their own accord. The mountains offer them protection from predators that they could not get in that area of Texas.

"not their native habitat"
Thats laughable here in Texas boy's. Tell that to the Russian Bores, Aoudad, Axis, and Black Bucks. I understand your theory but the threat from predators in Hill country is probably less than where they started from. If we have Aoudad out here why couldn't any sheep take hold?
Yes, They were Desert Bighorns alright.

I don't think there are bighorns in bandera county......or ever were.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

"Yeah Butt"... They sure are. You need to get outta the EZ chair and see them for yourselves before feeling the need to call someone a liar. I just don't understand why folks act this way. The desert Bighorn was reintroduced by TPWL and other agencies. They, just like the rest of these animals, have almost no hunting pressure and very little predators. I could easily make the case the rugged West Hill Country provides much more cover, food, and protection than their natural environment. I am very glad I got to see these Desert Big Horns in West Bandera county and wish y'all the same opportunity. It was a pleasure indeed. All I mentioned in the very begining was to know the differenced in the two.

Post an article or pics for proof that they were Desert Bighorns. Then I and others will believe. TPWD would not move a delicate species like Desert Bighorn into an area that has already got sheep, goats and exotic sheep/goats that are known to carry diseases that would decimate the herd of Bighorn if it were introduced. I searched the TPW site and could find no evidence to substantiate what you are trying to say that you have seen. If they had moved and relocated them it would be public on their site.
