Am I about done buying these things? I think I made my final trip to Cabellas until these start falling apart. Current line-up: (almost all of these are 50/50 Drake/Hen) 1 Mojo Drake 12 *NEW* G&H Mallards (reg size w/swivel head) 12 Academy Bond brand Mallards (incl 2 feeding and 2 sleeping) - cheap 6 Greenhead Ring Necks 2 Greenhead Pintails 2 Greenhead Wigeon 2 Greenhead Gadwall 6 Greenhead GW Teal I think I'll pick-up another 6 or 12 teal for next years early teal season but won't use those during the regular season. Any suggestions? My newest http://www.ghdecoys.com/mallard-duck-m4sw.htm

So that's almost 50 decoys? My normal duck spreads are 12-36 decoys total and a mojo. If there are more people in the party than 2 or 3 sometimes we'll do more.
The big question is do you think the Academy cheaps do just as good as your more expensive ones. We all want to be able to say yes to justify spending more on fancy decoys but I wonder if it really matters. For me I'd probably just get some middle of the road ones for my next purchase.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Expensive vs. Cheap.
Last longer look better more options weighted keel vs water keel I have a set of G&H that look great after 8 years and a set of flambeau that are 2 years old and look like crap.

Last longer? How so? I understand you are getting a better product for your money...they do look much much better but the one thing on your list that matters is do they actually decoy ducks in better than cheapos?
I really don't expect anyone on here to be able to answer that because no one has done any scientific type studies to see.
But in the past I've heard of people getting 2 litter plastic coke bottles and painting them black and saying they work.
Overall I'm a really frugal person but I'm happy to spend more on something that works better when it comes to waterfowling so to me this is kind of an interesting question. Maybe I should just start a new thread.

All I can say is that the better decoys like Avery's fool birds more times than others. I have be guiding waterfowlers full time as a living for 8 years and have hunted over just about any decoy out there. I can tell you that when it also come to goose hunting they were shooting snow geese ove news papper and baby dippers, then Rags, and now I hunt over full bodies and silo socks. I would much rather spend $1200 and hunt Rags, but my client much perfer the decoying power of a $8500 spead. When I was about 14 the big foot canada decoy came out in a big way. We killed limit after limit over them......and still do. If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and moves like a duck....it must be a duck! And if a jump sooter will ground sluse one of my decoys they are working.... Yes, more than once

I would think on a blue bird day you'd for sure want to have more real looking decoys...on those dark, foggy, cloudy days maybe it doesnt matter as much?
I can for sure see how a silo sock would work better than a rag...and those full body swival movement ones would work even better.

Decoy companies sure have many fooled! Do the 80.00 a dozen vs. the 30.00 a dozen make a difference? Yes BUT I can tell you we have killed more ducks hunting with cheap beat to hell blocks vs the real pretty ones. I have G&H/greenhead gear/ Flam's. I am just saying to not be fooled that you HAVE to have the most $$$$$ made to kill ducks! Be where the ducks want to be and that is 99.9% of it!

thats true, but day in and day out I would spend a little more to have the insurance on days that the X is over there, even when you think you are on the X some days its a little left or right of you and all the small details can help equal the X factor.

I think "newer" looking with better paint helps, but only on sun shinny days. Overcast it don't matter, but late season, when ducks are checking out spreads, I think decoys with good paint help, and spend more on decoys the paint last longer normally.

Maybe that explains why they fly more on cloudy days vs sunny days, THEY CAN SEE WHERE THEY ARE GOING! lol!
Hey, I did not know that either, I just know I can see my chity decoys on sunny days better than cloudy days and always think how I need to get better ones.

No matter what type of decoys you use, you may want to try this. Ever notice how shiny real ducks are.? To get your dekes to look the same way, buy some of those Armor-All wipes and rub them over your decoys. Makes them really shiny and helps keep them clean. You would be amazed in the difference it can make in your spread, especially on sunny days.
The black two liter thing works well, also.
One other thing I like to do is "modify" the paint scheme on my decoys. With mallard dekes, I like to make the white ring around the neck a lot bigger, as well as on the tail and the wing patches. The white can be seen from a long ways and seems to jump out more than the other colors. While I'm at it, I usually touch up the paint on all the decoys. Actually enjoy doing it, all part of the preseason ritual like scouting, blinds, dog tune-ups, etc.
