this past season was the first time i was on a lease...my daughter shot her first buck...great year just for that...my frustration is that it was the only deer we seen there and the farmer keeps putting more and more cows on the land building new fences during the season and so forth...the cattle have eaten everything on the lease it is overgrazed for sure...i remember when i went there as a guest before i was a member and it was thick and lush now barren...i am looking to get on another lease or just take my kids to an out fitter with the money i would have spent on the lease...to spend good money on a lease and the farmer to hammer the land like he did is crazy...i guess the next group that leases the land will be the next suckers...well my rant is over hope you enjoyed...God bless and shoot em straight

Yea I wouldn't worry about normal ranch operations, but over grazing is no good. Overgrazed with goats would be worst.

this time of year even teh best ranches look rough....not an indicator of poor cattle rotation.

i'd give it one more year,if you like the lease.

how was the hunting during season?

Sounds like the deer his daughter shot was the only one seen all year.

Merkin, deer and cattle are not in competition in the food chain unless it comes to grain. Deer are not grass eaters rather feed on the undergrowth like clover, fillery, and leaves off of oak trees and other brush. As you know they love oats and wheat and could care less for coastal and grasses. Sheep and goats are in direct competition with deer because they eat literally everything right down to the dirt even the bark off of trees.

Not sure about where you are but in South Texas in a dry times or in winter a cow will eat what a deer eats. In South Texas a cow can eat up to 70% of what a deer is eating during a drought, as cattle will switch to deer browse. This time of year when pastures are short and if you have had no rain for winter growth then cattle are a bad thing. A rancher checking and feeding cattle will also move deer off of a place if he does it daily and the cattle know it. Like posted goats and sheep are bad also. But any livestock in high numbers where pastures are put under to much grazing pressure is a bad thing for wildlife and they will move to an area of less competition.

I dont know how or how much you hunted but only seeing 1 deer all year would be a deal breaker for me. Cows or no cows.

Totally agree with you Ranchman

I hunted a goat ranch in Menard county. It was full of deer. I never went out and didn't see deer. It was low fenced. I don't think livestock is the problem, but their management might be.
